The Fashion of Reading Glasses: Beyond Hipster Chic!

The infamous hipster subculture has made wearing reading glasses cool again, even if you don’t need them to read.  Aside from the fact that reading glasses have been around for ages, the trends and style of these puppies move forward alongside the fashion currency. This fall put away the chucky frames hiding your face and grab a pair of thinner frames to highlight your best facial feature; your eyes. Our favorites are definitely Ray Bans but we wanted to highlight a few other options that are also on our favorites list!

Men’s Street Style Tips!

Street style goes beyond the labels and brands. It goes past any social standings and labels.  It goes beyond the racks of our favorite stores.  After all,  there’s no greater insult than to be labeled as an “off the rack” fashionista.

Style is the best way to express yourself and to experiment and find your own voice. Don’t let the crazy prices of designer wear scare you off and think you can’t be part of fashion or have great style.  In the powerful words of Nina GarciaFashion is expensive, style is not.” Here are some of our favorite ways to display street style in your everyday looks.

1. Dress pants aren’t just for dressy occasions anymore.  Pair your fitted slacks with a funky tank, high-tops shoes and killer accessories (don’t overdo it – sometimes less is more).  This style is fresh, fun, playful, almost flirty – it tells the world you’re here to have fun and you like to experience good things in the most laid back possible way.

2. Bright pants are the best way to display your love for colors and to show you’re not afraid to break the common boundaries of what not to wear.  This year we’ve seen bright colors take over the bodies on runways, racks in stores, and pages of magazines.  Invest on a fun color that suits your style best and pair it with your favorite old tee.  Nothing says style like your own collection of vintage and current pieces.

3. Sports fans even have the ability to play with style.  Jerseys aren’t the only way to represent your favorite team.  Vintage tees are perfect for summer games and nights out with your pals.  Forget the jeans this time and grab a pair of color chinos.  This is a good way to polish this sporty look and be comfortable during all of the festivities.

4. Don’t be afraid of prints! All over the streets of Europe, stylish, masculine men are wearing loud, print pants with a simple white tee and loafers.  Our stylish brothers from the other side of the world aren’t the only ones that can pull off this look.  We can do it too!  Just remember that if you’re going to wear these, don’t pair them with other prints or colors.  Grab a mute shirt, plain color, and no accessories; the pants are the focal piece.

Before you go out shopping for some of these looks, check your closets first.  We’re pretty sure you may have a few of these items already hanging in there.  Maybe not the bright color pants, but you get the idea…

Neutrally Loud…Men’s Fashion Tip on Wearing Neutral Colors

The ability to wear neutral colors is harder than it looks because you actually have to put effort into making it look neutral. Most of us are used to wearing colors, matching our outfits, color blocking, or even mixing and matching colors so that we can stand out.  The rest of us are incredibly monochromatic, which can be just as difficult.  As the color wheel keeps spitting new colors and the fashion designers of the world keep creating new styles and silhouettes, one thing remains organic – neutral colors.

Mixing your neutral colors with your everyday brights can be a fun game.  You can never go wrong when paring a neutral color with a bright.  The silent beauty of neutral color items is the texture they add to what you’re wearing.  The whole outfit becomes 3-dementional and you really get a feel for the different textures, layers, and your personality.

Stop by Nordstrom, Nordstrom Rack, Farfetch.com, Urban Outfitters, Saks Fifth Avenue, and even Target for neutral color pieces and have fun matching them with the rest of your things in your closet!

Monk Strap Shoes…Best Shoe for Fall 2012

The Monk Strap shoe has been in and out of style for a long while now, 15th century to be exact.  The Italians have had their fingers – in this case toes – in on the pulse of fashion since the beginning of time!  These shoes are said to originate from the friars (Roman Catholic high member of the church) in the Italian Alps, later brought to London where this unique shoe became a trend.

This fall season, fashion history cycles again to bring these shoes back in trend.  Here are a couple of ways you can wear them best:

  • Where them with a narrow pair of pants.  The current idea of these shoes is to show the decorative strap and buckle.
  • No socks are encouraged for both casual and formal.  The shoes are trendy enough that anything goes well with them.
  • If you want to wear socks, get creative with them – choose some that are appropriate for the weather and also have fun with patterns and colors.

Now that you know how to wear them, here are a couple of tips on how to take care of them:

  • Dust a little bit of body power, like Gold Bond, before you wear them sock-less and after. It keeps your feet cool during the hot days and smelling fresh after.
  • Polish your shoes! A true well-dressed gentleman will feel completely dressed once his shoes are polished.  Get the cream/wax at the shoe store or pay the $5 at the train station; add old school charm to something that is already classy.
  • Get yourself a pair of comfortable inserts.  If you take care of your shoes, they will take care of you.

And as always…

How to Spice Up Your Suit

Most men, know how to put a suit together.  We get it tailored, match it with a great shirt, tie, belt, shoes…the works.  But do we know to add some spice to it to make our own creative style stand out from the rest? When does it become too much or not enough?  The idea of spicing your suit up is focused around what you wear it with, not necessary the suit itself.  Lately, there are a lot of bright colored suits or busy prints – completely missing the point of why you’re dressing up in the first place. You don’t’ want it to be about the suit, you want it to be about you in the suit.  These are some of the ways we would do it…but not all at once! Remember these are meant to be ways to quietly be noticed, loudly whispered about, and above all, subtly desired.

  1.  The magic of plaid is incredible and undeniable.  The understated, yet overly used, print is a great way to update your formal look.  It allows you to be playful, comfortable, and yet still appropriate for any formal occasion. Throw on a solid tie that matches the highlighted colors of the suit and you’re ready to go.
  2. Anyone that understands style knows that shoes are what bring the look together.  If you go all out on a suit, shirt, tie, please make sure you don’t forget the shoes! Don’t mess it up by wearing some funky old shoes that should have been thrown away years ago.  Grab a pair of studded Christian Louboutins and show everyone that not only you know how to kiss French, but you also dress French. If you don’t have the money for a pair of men’s Louboutins, at least spice it up with a pair of formal shoes that speaks of your individual style.
  3. A good, subtle way to have fun with a formal suit is picking a fun pair of socks.  Grab a pair of bright colored ones that match your shirt and tie.  This way, every time you sit down you tease your onlookers with a flash of color that showcases your fun personality.
  4. The whimsical touch of the classic bow tie has hit pop culture and modernized it to its fullest.  Today, all kinds of men wear them.  They come in pretty much every color and any print and fabric so how do you really make this bow tie your bow tie? This I leave to you. Have fun with it.  Shop around until you find a tie that speaks of you and your individual style.  Take the time to learn how to tie a bow tie. Instructional videos can be found on YouTube.  No matter how over played the bow tie seems at times, no one can deny an authentic, vintage hand tied, bow tie; especially in a tux!
  5. When all fails, grab a good designer belt.  The staple piece not only will bring attention to your high taste in fashion but also be a great conversation starter.  A strong Gucci or Louis Vuitton belt with a classic suit will not display garish style but will let onlookers know you care enough to notice the small details.

Remember that these 5 style tips aren’t really meant to be worn together, but separate to really highlight your sense of personal style.  The true art of a good suit is to make the man stand out from the rest without his masculinity being in question.   If you just can’t bring yourself to try something different, always remember this: tailor your suit.  It’s the best investment men can make when it comes to formal wear!

Ideal places to shop for these items: Nordstrom Rack, Nordstrom, Saks Fifth Avenue, Farfetch.com, Prada, and Macys.

And always remember…

The Art of TIE

School is just a few weeks away – sick – so before you move into your dorm room, or fraternity house, or start buying your books for your senior year in high school or even a couple of suits for your fall internship; we want to give you some clues into The Art of TIE.  The concept is simple – ties are meant to be a focal point, an accessory, a way for you to show the world you have style – an opinion.  So when choosing these puppies keep in mind that this is to show case your personal style.  Play with color and textures.  Play with styles and width.  Most importantly, have fun and remember TO BE YOU.

Bow ties will show the world you have style, a playful one at best.  These classic ties have been around for ages and with their current twist they make for perfect accents in the dull corporate world of grey and black suits.  Bow ties also make for great party accessories.  They tell everyone you’re fun, playful, and not afraid to be yourself.  They are also the perfect form of masculine flirting.  Our own rule: make sure you know how to tie a bow tie! (No clip on bow ties please!)

The magic about the “regular” tie is that you can wear it with anything! Pair it with a polo and some chino shorts and you’ve got yourself a nice “off the boat” look which can be worn to class, a first date, a party or night out with friends.  The trick about these babies is the knot, of which their are two primary species; the Windsor Knot (the one that looks like an upside down pyramid), and the Four in Hand knot (the asymmetrical knot).  The Windsor Knot is perfect for all dress shirts, it’s more formal and you can wear it to work, an interview or your internship.  The Four in Hand knot is a bit more laid back, not as too formal and it works with any button down shirt.

Don’t know how to tie a tie? Check out our friends over at Tie-aTie.net! They have videos and directions on how to tie any tie! Or just YouTube how to do it and follow their steps – we trust them, so you should too!  Remember to have fun with your ties, they tell the world you have an opinion.

5 Ways to Wear a Blazer in the Summer Heat

Men have a tendency to think that dressing up for an occasion is simple and that anything will fit the occasion.  Simply throw on a jacket, button down collar shirt and a pair of loafers and call it a day.  While that may be good enough for your nephew’s graduation, it isn’t necessarily fashionable.   During the summer heat, men find it a bit changeling to keep up with current trends and still make an impression, so here are five simple ways to put together an impressionable summer outfit that is current in trend.

1. Mix-and-Match – The ever so classic technique of mixing and matching the items in your closet would be the perfect way to start.  Grab your favorite pair of dress chinos(grey is usually a safe choice)pair it with a plaid shirt and throw on a navy blue blazer.  The plaid shirt will add contrast and texture to your ensemble, making it fresh and current.  Forget the socks with this one.  Roll up the cuffs of your pants and you’ll add a bit of flair to the whole look.

2. Captain 2012 – Mix the colors up with this look.  Don’t be afraid to pick bright and bold colors.  The age friendly boat look is perfect for a day at the beach, a quick stop at the office, or a late lunch date.  What really makes this look a boat look, aside from the light color blazer, is the shoes – classic boat shoes.

3. Black on Black – Summer is filled with weddings and events, so invest on a nice, fitted tailored suit.  You can pair it with any color dress shirt if you feel like adding color, but for a summer night event stick with black.  This clean cool style adds a bit of mystery to your whole persona and with a bit of confidence you may leave the event with a new number… or several.

4. Polished Hipster – This combination of items allows you to play with what you have and with what you would like to shop for.  A pair of fitted jean shorts paired with a clean cut polo is perfect for comfort.  Throw on a dark colored blazer and some oxford wingtip shoes and this looks becomes ideal for a summer night party or even a first date.  Remember to play with colors you enjoy and feel comfortable in, especially since this look is different and probably outside your comfort zone.

5. Jeans and a B – Guys can always rely on a good pair of jeans and a comfortable blazer – you can wear it to pretty much anything at any time of the year.  During the summer try to pair this combination with something unconventional from your closet, like a fitted v-neck tee or a baggy tank.  This unusual combination will update your look and allow you to have fun trying something new and different.  Throw on a pair of high top shoes to really funk up the look.

Favorite places to shop for these looks would be Nordstrom Rack, Urban Outfitters, Farfetch.com, Saks Fifth Avenue, and Pac Sun.

Out of Our Closet Today 7-18-12: Pool Party for One

All of your friends are working but you have the day off and it’s 100 degrees and perfectly sunny.  You head to the pool.  After getting your lounge chair set up, you dive in and let the bath temperature water flow over you.  You love summer.  After you swim, you get out and grease up your body the old fashioned, dangerous way; baby oil.  You plug in your headphones and start your playlist for summer anthems.  After an hour, you’ve had enough of the sun and decide a nap inside is a better way to spend a 100 degree day.  You wake up hours later. The sun is gone and the moon has replaced it’s midsummer glow.  The smell of baby oil radiates the room as the heat from the burn on your skin radiates with heat.  You take a quick shower, throw on a tank and shorts and head out to meet your friends for dinner.  You smile as you walk out…if only every day felt like summer.

Project Runway’s Althea Harper!

We are huge fans of Project Runway.  We’ve watched every season and every episode while rooting for our favorites from the sidelines on our couch.  The premiere of Season 10, the newest installment of the reality show, will air Thursday, July 19th on the Lifetime network.  In the past, our obsession with reality television’s elite fashion show has allowed us to interview famed Project Runway judge Nina Garcia and now we’ve had the honor of interviewing our all-time favorite, Season 6 runner up Althea Harper.  Maybe we love her because she’s a native Midwesterner like ourselves or maybe we love her because she interned for two of our fashion idonl, Alexander McQueen and Vivienne Westwood.  Either way, Althea Harper has proven she’s a powerful force in the fashion industry.  When we met her, we were absolutely blown away.  Although we expected her to be tall, she literally towered, almost like a skyscraper, above everyone else and definitely commanded respect and fascination.  Her soft nature interwoven with her strong opinion made us even bigger fans, wanting to interview her and find out more about what made her so capable of being strong, confident and not afraid to be sexy!

1. Introduce us to Althea Harper: the designer, the everyday women, and the newlywed.

I am a woman’s wear contemporary designer originally from the Midwest but now spend my time alternating between NYC and CT.  I have a strong passion for what I do and I truly believe that what a woman wears dictates how she feels and therefore what she accomplishes.  I am also a newlywed that loves my husband, friends and family!

2. When did you first know you wanted to become a fashion designer?

I have known that I wanted to be a fashion designer since I realized that there was an occupation that allowed you to draw clothes (of course that is about 5% of what I do). I love that you can use both sides of your brain- I can be creative but I also have to understand how to run a business.

3. What are three things we wouldn’t know by looking at you?

Three thing that you wouldn’t know by looking at me is that I LOVE pizza- I could probably eat it for every meal and I crave it all the time- unfortunately I am gluten intolerant and not supposed to eat it but it is my weakness.  I completed in the Junior Olympics for track and field on my AAU track team and I’ve been one of the girls painted in latex at a Playboy party  – that always surprises people but I swear its more coverage then a bikini!

4. As you become more successful as a designer, who are the top three designers you look up to and why?

My best experience was working for Alexander McQueen- not only for his talent but how he treated people.  I admire Zac Posen for the same reason.  I love that Rachel Roy is not only a great designer but also style icon.

5. What kind of woman wears Althea Harper?

Strong, confident and not afraid to be sexy!

6. How do you keep a fresh look in fashion and from where do you pull inspiration?

I pull inspiration from anything- I never know what is going to inspire me the next season. Staying fresh is following your creativity and being aware of trends but not living by them.

7. Season 6 of Project Runway seems so long ago. Tell us about your day to day experience of what the show and the competition were like?

The show was very intense and it was 7 days a week 24 hours a day.  We really didn’t get any time off.  We also usually slept less then 5 hours a night. It really was sewing and designing all day long. The days we had eliminations could also go till 2am.

8. Out of all the contestants on that season, who do you still keep in touch with?

I love Ra’mon and Christopher is very supportive.  I keep in touch with Malvin as well and run into Carol Hannah and Nicholas in NYC.

9. Tim Gunn seems, in the show, to be a great mentor for the designers. How much time do you guys actually spend with him and how helpful is he?

We spent a fair amount of time with him and he was a great mentor.  He kept the competition real, and reminded my of a professor.

10. The competition seems to become tougher and tougher each season.  What is something that you think the judges look for in a designer?

The ability to not only design but understand how to construct a garment, stay in trend while still being different and of course it takes a certain type of person who can handle being filmed all the time.

11. We would love to see you on the screen again! Any TV projects in the works?

There are a few.  Can’t give any details though due to contract restrictions…so boring I know!

12.  The new season of Project Run way is about to start – what piece of advice would you give to these new designers?

Stay confident!!  You might not agree with all the judges decisions or have the support you want from the fellow designers but it is important to stay true to yourself!

 13. How do you define sexy?

Confidence

14. What do you believe is the sexiest city in the world? Sexiest hotel? Sexiest club? Sexiest designer?

Sexiest city- Ibiza

Sexiest hotel- The Standard Miami

Sexiest club- XS in Vegas

Sexiest designer – me and Tom Ford

15. In the celebrity world, who would your ideal “muse” be and why?

Penelope Cruz- she is everything! Smart, gorgeous, sexy and talented!

16. For all the brides to be, what are the top 3 dos and don’ts when preparing for your wedding?

1- have no regrets- if u want a low bust line on your dress but are worried what your grandma might think- just do it! ( as long as its not TOO low)! You want to look you best and feel your best do do whatever will make u feel that way – even if it’s not traditional.  I think regret is the worst feeling and the last you want to associate with your wedding day.

2- don’t sweat the small stuff- as long as there is a open bar and a DJ the rest will all just be a bonus! People remember the great time that they had- not the detail of the china.

3- have as many bridesmaids as you want! I had 13!! But they were all special to me and I wouldn’t go back and change a thing- I love that they were all part of my day!!

17. How do you define style and how would someone find or exhibit their own sense of style?

Style is not something you can copy from a magazine- but a feeling and look of how you put all your pieces together. It’s a very individualized thing.

18. When you travel, what are five items you must have with you at all times?

Phone

Sketch book and pencils

Good book

Moisture spray for my skin

A gossip mag (my weakness)

19. To all of the guys and girls, young or old, who dream of being a fashion designer…what is your best piece of advice?

It’s not an easy road but with enough passion you can get through anything!

20. What are three of your simple luxuries?

A great eye cream and moisturizer, my Apple products, and a high quality (ie designer, quality leather, etc) over sized purse.
