Walk on the Wild Side…Back to Our Roots!

In an effort to pull back to our roots and start posting some of the music that formed us, made us who we are today, we’ve been posting daily music picks of our flashback favorites.  Lou Reed’s Walk on the Wild Side was a definitive moment for both of us, helping us to realize that our differences from everyone else, those things that made us unique and insecure, were what made us beautiful and unique.  Walk on the Wild Side is a dedication to diversity and beauty in being who you are and embracing those differences.  Of course, it reminds us of younger days, smoking cigarettes behind thick, black sunglasses, wearing cords and leather jackets thinking we were the coolest things on Earth.  Guess what…we were!

Bob Sinclar’s NEW “Groupie” Turns Us On!

We have long been huge fans of Bob Sinclar and since the release of his newest single and video “Groupie”, we’re even bigger fans.  His sound is always so happy and charismatic and he’s always one step ahead of the rest, collaborating old and new sounds into his own ingenious tunes.  After only 14 weeks on the European Dance Charts it is holding steady at #10.  We hope you love it as much as we do!

The Gypsy Queens! L’Americano…We’re Obsessed!

The Gypsy Queen’s first album isn’t even out yet, and we’re already obsessed.  It doesn’t hurt that their style is reminiscent of yesteryear, spent in some small French or Italian bar, dancing all night long while some great band sweats it up in the crowded corner.  It doesn’t hurt that the lead singer, Didier Casnati, is absolutely gorgeous.

It doesn’t hurt that these guys are the real deal and probably the next HUGE thing.  Their sound is a mix of French 50’s Jazz, with American country roots and the soft whisper of the Brazilian sertanejo singers like Michel Telo.  Their sound is absolutely incredible! Not only that, but their story reads like some bestselling novel! Check it out on their website in their About section HERE!  Below, we’ve included their first official video for their rendition of the classic L’Americano! We’ve also included footage from behind the scenes in Nice.

Gipsy Kings Bamboleo…Is One of a Kind!

As you’ve seen in our last few posts, we’re going to start posting some of our all time favorite musicians and songs.  Just because music is older or isn’t currently trending doesn’t mean that it isn’t relevant.  We have been huge fans of The Gipsy Kings forever and Bamboleo is one of our favorite songs.  Who doesn’t crush to a fast paced love song??? Not to be confused with the Gypsy Queens, The Gipsy Kings are a group of guys from France who sing in Spanish.  Check out the video clip for Bamboleo below and search for more of their music on their website HERE!

Janis Ian “At Seventeen”…Is About Most of Us.

Janis Ian isn’t just a character in one of our favorite movies, she’s actually a singer.  When I was much younger, my mother would dance around the kitchen, a daisy behind her ear and sing softly the words of Janis Ian’s infamous song “At seventeen”.  I’m not sure at five or six I understood the words, but as I grew up, the words resonated with my individuality and my ability to never fit circles into squares.  In a way, I was that girl at seventeen.  In a way, we all were…and some of us still are…

Below we’ve posted the video of her singing At Seventeen way back when as well as her singing the song four years ago.  She is just as haunting and beautiful as she was in 1975 when she won a Grammy for “At Seventeen”.  If you’re already a lover of this song, please close your eyes and think back to when you first heard it.  If you’ve never heard it before, and you’re much younger, embrace the words and let them resonate even today.

Nico…These Days, The Interview and The LSD Jesus Trip!

Many of the kids out there think we only love EDM music or that we only listen to music that is highly relevant today…but that’s not the case.  Although you might not guess it, we are true lovers of music from a bygone era.  Our musical tastes can be seen in our home, which is decorated minimally, but with definite bohemian accents making it obvious that we’re affected by a varying degree of musical and artistic backgrounds, as well as artifacts from our gypsy pursuits.  We love anything different, unique or creative.  At any given time, several different projects are laying around on tables or planned out in sketch books.  The people in our life are much like the music we listen to…different with every beat.  How boring would it be to meet someone who only likes one kind of music, or only reads one kind of book…or only likes one kind of sex?  For that matter, we believe in diversity of all kinds of music.   But, when it’s just the two of us, lounging around or being romantic, it is this music from a lost generation that sifts through our speakers;  Nina Simone, Dinah Washington and the Velvet Underground. For this reason, we thought it would be fun to start picking one of our Flashback Favorites every day to showcase their influence on our culture today! (By all means, if you have a favorite please send it to us and we’ll put it up!) Because we

Think back to cold Novembers, rain covered pavement in New York City, black turtlenecks, poetry read in coffee shops…and Nico.  We love her and we’re sure, if you haven’t heard of her, you will too! Infamous as part of The Velvet Underground, Nico made her own name with her breakout album Chelsea Girl, but she was also a famous model and part of the Andy Warhol superstar troupe associated with The Factory!

Check out one of her greatest hits below, These Days, and let us know what you think! It really sounds much better on vinyl so we suggest you go out and buy the album and listen to it on your record player.  We’ve also posted an amazing interview with Nico where she discusses The Velvet Underground, Andy Warhol and The Jesus Trip!

We love you Nico.

The New Beliebers 2012: Beauty and a Beat!

Justin Bieber isn’t necessarily synonymous with sexuality, sensuality and maturity, but with the introduction of his last few songs, most importantly Beauty and a Beat with Ft. Nicki Minaj, he has entered a whole new world of adulthood.  We were never huge fans of Justin Bieber before now.  Sure, his songs were dancy and catchy, but they didn’t seem to have any true musical integrity before and his celebrity was mostly held with a 12-16 year old fangirl base.  Until now.

In his new music, we’re sensing a whole new Justin emerging, one which collaborates hip hop, EDM and pop into an entire new genre all of it’s own.  Do we dare call this genre the new era of the Belieber?

Whether you love him or hate him, he has undeniably entered a new stage of his career and we love him…100%.  Yes, we’re here to say we belong to that category of The New Beliebers!

If you haven’t heard his newest song Beauty and a Beat, check it out below and see if you agree!
