Costello Tagliapietra…THE Interview!

ct1

Collectively, Costello Tagliapietra, as a fashion label, have created lines that are delicate, feminine, soft and incredibly perfect for any woman that loves designers who know how to make a woman feel beautiful.  Their knowledge on what works on a woman’s body has allowed them to create, season after season, lines that consistently place them on top of the “must attend” shows during fashion weeks. As individuals, they are unified in a masculine mystique and history of being trained by their grandmothers.  Jeffery Costello has experienced the fashion, music, and art world, expanding his personal way of expression and pool of inspiration. Robert Tagliapietra has been part of the New York fashion industry since a young age and together they’ve become a power couple and  New York fashion house that’s loved by many.   What we love most about these fashionistas, on top of their eye for creation and design, is their personal style and outlook on the industry.  They dress for themselves, live to be happy and create to bring joy to women around the world.

ct3

1. Introduce us to Jeffrey and Robert in 7 words or less each.

Dressmakers, husbands, music-obsessed, video gamers, painters, round and friendly

2. Who is the girl who wears Costello Tagliapietra?

She is someone who is looking for something to express strength, femininity and romance and an inner sensuality that comes from confidence and comfort.

3. How did you meet and go into business together?

We met in 1994 at the Sound Factory in New York a few months before it closed down.  We were introduced (both too shy to speak to one another) through our friend Lauren Rosselli Johnson.  Robert was studying painting at Parsons and Jeffrey was working with musicians and actresses on wardrobes and costumes.  At the time we met, Jeffrey was working on Madonna’s Bedtime Story video and Robert happily assisted… so began the working relationship.

4. How do you separate business from personal when it comes to your relationship?

You cannot always do so, but you learn how to at least separate it mentally by limiting when you can discuss work related issues.

5. As designers, how do you think you’ve influenced the current fashion industry?

We hope we have influenced it by bringing a certain fluidity and femininity back to fashion without the obvious archetypes.  Our aesthetic always leans towards the minimal but at the core what we strive for is beauty and romanticism.

6. Do you believe you have changed to fit into the fashion industry? Why or why not?

Not sure we ever really acknowledged this idea.  If what you mean is our personal look, we have always been ourselves. If you mean the collections, sure, you always have to listen to your clients and not just design in a bubble.  Fashion is a commercial business and the intention is to sell clothes to people and our job is to ensure these people feel happy, feminine and confident when they wear these clothes.  Sometimes your favorite dress is not always the best seller.  Of course when the two are the same you are happiest.

7. If you were each a kind of fabric, which one would you be and why?

Personally we would both be worn flannels; soft and cuddly.

ct2

8. Jeffrey, what’s your favorite season to design for and why?

We both love spring, there is an inherent lightness associated that works extremely well with our aesthetic.

9. Robert, which starlet or celebrity would be your ideal client?

We both have always loved Shelly Duvall, her balance of beauty and quirky strikes a chord in us.

10. Where do you pull inspiration for each line you create?

It really starts with an indefinable mood or feeling that becomes the foundation for the collection, and the process of figuring that intangible thing out and defining it through shape, color and print.  We like to absorb everything we see and hear and filter that through what we make.

11. How do you define sexy?

Should be romantic and sensual and come equally from how clothes get put on to how they are taken off.

12. What is the sexiest…

City? Tokyo, Japan

Hotel? Standard NY

Designer? Poiret

Model? Too many to name

Place to kiss? Bedroom

13. What is a piece of advice you would give to a young designer trying to make it in the fashion industry?

Be prepared to be flexible and listen to everyone around you and then most importantly listen to yourself.

14. What’s next for Costello Tagliapietra?

Building the world of C&T one step at a time….. and some even more accessible surprises!

15. What are your three simple luxuries?

Early morning Walks in the woods or along the beach, our bulldog Sam and food!

Thanks guys!!!

T-Shirt Tuesdays: Rare Vintage Concert Tees!

led zeppelin

If you watch our style closely, you know we are huge fans of mixing the old with the new.  While Alex is definitely a fan of high quality designers(Burberry, Louis Vuitton, Paul Smith, Michael Bastain, Michael Kors, Hermes and Dior) I(Peter) fall more to the vintage, filling my closet with pearl buttoned western shirts, dusty Red Wing boots and vintage concert tees.  We thought it would be interesting to see if anything I own is actually worth anything, being that I have old concert tees of my father’s dating back to the 70’s.  Yep…I actually own an original Dylan and The Dead.  After researching this a bit, we found we might be able to get a few hundred dollars for one of these tees(the Bruce Springsteen baseball shirt is actually worth the most) but who wants to part ways with the jewels of the closet.  Not me, that’s for damn sure!

But it got us wondering…just what is the worth of those dated treasures in your closet?  We searched all over the web and found the listings for tons of expensive concert tees dating all the way back to the 50’s.  You might be surprised to find that some concert tees, like a signed Britney Spears from her first concert, are among the most valuable! Right now on Ebay, the most expensive vintage concert tee is listed as the RAREST LED ZEPPELIN 1979 Knebworth Original Backstage Pass Concert Tee at only $7000!!!! (They have 2 offers that they’ve already declined!)Not bad if you want to look badass as hell and you have the coin to back it up! It’s like buying an original Catcher in the Rye or pair of Frye boots!

Your best chances are probably digging through your local thrift stores! Do you have any hot, vintage concert tees??? Let us know your favorites or better yet, send us a picture! And if you’re trying to get a few off of your hands…I’m always here with open arms!

To find vintage concert t-shirts in your area, search online for thrift, 2nd hand, consignment or vintage stores! Good Luck!

Flashback Fridays! Bizarre Love Triangle

Substance

New Order: Substance.  At some point I probably should have started charting how many times I listened to this album.  At least a few hundred.  Maybe even a thousand.  For me, it was the quintessential album of adolescence.  While listening to it I loved, I laughed, I cried, I drove all over the US, got drunk, broke a few laws, maybe a few hearts and yet…kept rewinding the tape.  Hands down the best song on the album was/is Bizarre Love Triangle.  I’m not sure what made it so great but no matter what group defined you in high school, everyone knew and loved this song.

Fragrance Fridays! What Cologne Should I Buy My Boyfriend?

signature scent

Regularly, our girlfriends ask us, “what cologne should I buy for my boyfriend?“.  First of all, what fun would it be if we gave everyone the same answer?  How would the men of the world smell if they all wore Axe Body Spray??? Every man should have his own specific scent as well as a scent you like him to wear because it reminds you of him or you picked it out for him.  Even better is if your man wears a cologne that both of you can wear because it’s so universally sexy it isn’t gender defined.

bleecker-street_photo_large

Bond #9 Bleecker Street is the perfect scent.  Not only does it smell absolutely incredible on men, but equally as sensual on women.  It’s expensive enough that not everyone can afford to own it and it lingers long after the man of your dreams leaves your apartment.  It will make you want to keep one of his shirts just so when he’s not there you can sleep in it and remember that perfect night.  We’ve worn it for a few years and we still get compliments on it regularly.  While light, it’s also woodsy and dark, forging images of late nights in small bars in the South of France.  Highlighted notes: Violet leaf, cassis, jasmine, cinnamon, oakmoss, patchouli, vanilla and caramel.  This is hands down one of our top 3 scents of all time.  So splurge…

100 ml – $245

50 ml – $180

Gold Pocket Spray 7ml – $95

Bond #9 Bleecker Street is available HERE at the Bond #9 website! (Which also has limited edition Bleecker Street Swarovski 100 ml $395 seen below)

Combination feat. Tommy Clint: Wake Up the Neighbors

combination

Wakes Up the Neighbors from Combination Feat. Tommy Clint has literally hit the European Dance Charts running.  Only in it’s 2nd week, the hot single has already moved from #57 to #25.  And we have to be honest…we didn’t love this song when we first heard it.  Actually, we kind of thought it was some bad demo someone had sent us to review.  But after listening to it a few times and having in in the background while we were driving around, the lyrics stuck in our head and we were in love.  But isn’t that what happens with tons of chart breaking hits?  Not to mention the video is awesome! Enjoy it and let us know what you think!

Throwback Thursdays: New Balance Gives Life to Vintage New Balance

new balance vintage

There is a danger to simply throwing the word “vintage” in front of any fashion item expecting to add a bit of quality to it which it might not deserve. For example, not all “vintage” concert tees are deserving of the same classic recognition as an original 1972 Dylan and The Dead.  While that is true, any classic brand which decides to bring back a classic look and rename it “vintage” has probably earned the right to the classic title.  New Balance is a brand which has rightfully earned this status.

New Balance has announced they will be releasing their 2013 Spring/Summer ‘Vintage’ Pack highlighted in classic treatment with windbreaking colors found in the early 80’s.  Although they’re a little thicker than their original styles, they are reminiscent to bygone days and feathered hair.  While New Balance hasn’t set a release date on these amazing beauties, we’re sure it’s right around the corner in time for summer to rock them out on the beach.

If you can’t wait until then, check out Ebay for tons of actual vintage New Balance and Nike shoes!

Didier Casnati of The Gypsy Queens…THE Interview!

didier casnati 3

About six months ago, we heard a clip of The Gypsy Queens’ L’Americano on National Public Radio and became instant fans.  We came home and quickly Googled their name, expecting to find several chart-topping albums in Europe.  We were surprised to find they hadn’t even released their debut album, which was just recently released last December.  After watching the video for their debut song, L’Americano, we not only fell in love with their music, but also with their style, grace and overall essence.  They encompassed something, as men, we wanted to embrace in ourselves and that which most women would want to seduce.  As a band, they were just so damn sexy and their music made us feel sexy! When we read the About section on their website, we were even more surprised to find their lead singer and “soul of the Gypsy Queens” had been serving tables several years ago when the bad was discovered.  After listening to their music and reading their stories we became quite enthralled and had to find out more about the man behind the soul of the Gypsy Queens…the next big thing!

the gypsy queens

1. Introduce us to the Gypsy Queens using five words?

Real, acoustic, fun, unpredictable, witty.

2. How did you come together as a band?

Through the large music community of music and musicians in Nice, and busking.

3. How were you discovered?

We are still to be discovered.

4. How did you come up with the name the Gypsy Queens?

I didn’t. It was a notorious restaurateur in Rome, who said we reminded him of the gypsy kings, cause we were going around with our guitars etc, but because his venue was a gay venue, we were to be called the gypsy queens.

5. What can we expect from your first album?

To discover how with Larry Klein, we have put together 5 different cultures to make our listeners travel with us.

didier casnati 1

6. Your sound is a great mix of many different genres.  How would you define your sound?

Maybe we created a new sound with Larry. I would have to ask him, but I may suggest “acoustic busking” as our sound.

7. What is your all-time favorite movie?

Scent of a Woman.

8. If you were to recommend a book to a friend, what would you recommend?

“The Making of the Gypsy Queens” but I haven’t written it entirely yet.

9. Your look, feel and sound almost seem to have a magically fictional quality.  Who is a fictional character you idolized growing up?

I got into music because I wanted to be Michael Jackson. Although he was a real person, I think he had created a MJ that was quite fictional to simple people like me, because he seemed inaccessible. Otherwise, I am the Pink Panther – but that’s a secret.

10. Who are your three greatest musical influences?

Although he doesn’t have much to do with how the band sounds, Michael Jackson. The Eagles, and The Beatles.

the gypsy queens 2

11. If you could play with any musician, dead or alive, who would you choose?

Ray Charles, Elton John, and The Beatles

12. How do you define sexy?

Its beautiful women like Sophia Loren, Brigitte Bardot, or Charlize Theron who define the word sexy, not Didi of the Gypsy Queens…

13. What is the sexiest city? Bar? Drink? Song? Hotel? Place to kiss?

With the right person, any place is magic. Having the right person with you. There is a little restaurant on the water in Bonaire – Dutch Antilles, where the sun disappears behind the ocean around 7 pm at night in January… I don’t remember the name of the place, but it’s magic!

14.  What advice would you give someone about making their dreams come true?

Stay awake! And don’t take anyone or anything for granted.

15.  Frank Sinatra or Freddie Mercury?

Mercury

didier casnati

16.  Speedo or Trunks?

Trunks

17.  Red Wine or Whiskey?

Don’t drink alcohol. But it would be red wine.

18. What is a great finale song?

Every performance is different, and that could be a different song every time. Hit the Road Jack?

19.  What can we expect next from the Gypsy Queens?

To let us welcome you into our world and for us to be the same as we’ve always been; hard working, humble, sincere and happy!

20. What are your three simple luxuries?

Spending time with the ones I love, doing what I like the most for a living (music) and being at home a few days a month!
