Behind the Scenes with Courtni Hall Miss Indiana USA 2009

csh

This week, the boys of raannt go behind the scenes and play 20 questions with your choice, Courtni Hall Miss Indiana USA 2009!

1. What name would you like to be used on our interview? Courtni Shabana Hall
2. Are you a morning person or a night owl? Definitely a night owl! I usually don’t go to bed until morning hours.
3. Of the three…Miss California(who spoke out against gay marriage), Miss South Carolina(who spoke incorrectly), and Miss USA at the Miss Universe pageant(who fell on stage), who do you think will gain more fame from their mishap and why? Former Miss California USA, Carrie. I believe she has had the most news coverage and overall recognition because of her statements. I do commend her for stating her opinion, because as we know that is one of the greatest freedoms we have here in America. The reason everyone reacted in that way and why she has gained so much fame is because she made it appear as a national opinion. She has gained so much fame she has written a book! Ultimately, people will forget about a nervous answer from Miss South Carolina Teen USA and someone slipping on stage at Miss Universe. However, no one will forget the uproar that derived from her answer.
4. Las Vegas nights in August or fireside nights in Aspen? I would love an August night in Vegas. Since I am 23 and just made a trip there for 3 weeks at Miss USA I’d love to go back and experience it without the bodyguards.
5. Long or short showers? Long showers without question. I was the one in the family that always ran out the hot water!
6. Typically how long does it take you to get ready? Thanks to Miss USA I can now get ready in 1/2 hour. If I have to wash my hair it’s usually an hour and a half because it’s naturally curly and takes some time to blow out.
7. Last book you read and a book you are currently reading, if any? The last book I read was “Words that Work: It’s not what you say, it’s what people hear” by Frank Luntz. I read this for preparation for Miss USA. I am currently reading the “Left Behind” series I am on Nicolae at the moment.
8. A movie that profoundly impacted your life? Slumdog Millionaire. This movie somewhat emulates what my life could’ve been if I had grown up in India. I was abandoned at birth at only 2 lbs. 2 oz. in Calcutta. This was one of the only windows I could see through into life in India. Minus becoming a millionaire off of a show of course. Fortunately, I was adopted and have had the joys and opportunities living here in America.
9. What is something about you that we wouldn’t know by looking at you? That I love to eat! I am a smaller with a more petite frame and not quite a 100 pounds. But I can out eat most people. I love Big Macs, Thanksgiving dinner, and Chocolate Marshmallow Ice Cream. My favorite food of all time is Chocolate Chip Cookies and I try to have some on hand in case I ever get a craving! One time my neighbor and I had a wing eating competition at BDubs and he won. He was also 240 pounds! The goal was 50 wings, which he ate, and I ate 31. We were both hurting after, but it was a fun story.
c1
10. Who is a celebrity role model to you and why? love Ellen! She is such a funny, charismatic woman. I love her because she always reaches out to people to help. She is so genuine and I would love to meet her. I have modeled my year of service as Miss Indiana USA after her generosity and compassion she’s showed to the guests on her show.
11. What would people find surprising about you? I am learning to be a pilot. Jared, my boyfriend, is teaching me. We have started learning slow fight, descents, and coordinated turns. He went to college to have a career as a pilot and he’s an excellent instructor. I love flying. We you are piloting you’re own aircraft it gives you a sense of limitless boundaries and a new perspective on the world. You aren’t restricted by roads and it decreases travel time. I can’t wait to take my first solo-flight!
12. When you were 10 what did you want to be when you grew up? When I was 10 I wanted to be Miss USA and a famous singer or actress. I actually practiced my signature to see how it would look. I am proud to say I have accomplished the first step to become Miss USA by representing Indiana on national television. That’s one of two. Now I’d like to become an entertainment TV host on E! or the Food Network.
13. What is a magazine you always read? I love Cosmopolitan! I love all of the shopping finds, make-up tips, and especially the interviews with the successful, sexy women in the entertainment industry. I love learning about them because it shows a side of them you don’t see on film or when they sing.
14. Most romantic restaurant in Indy? The Eagle’s Nest. Of course it could’ve been who I was with and the occasion. It was Valentine’s Day and I was surprised with going to the Eagle’s Nest by my boyfriend, Jared. I was the only person who didn’t know. After riding the elevator to the top, and eating while watching a beautiful sunset over the Indy skyline he surprised me with a gorgeous Journey diamond necklace! It was the most perfect, romantic night and I couldn’t think of a better place to go.
15. Most romantic city in the world? Not just because I represent this state, but I truly love Indianapolis and think it is very romantic. I have traveled to many different cities all over the U.S. I believe any city can be romantic. It’s what you make of it. I’ve been to Paris, France and it’s very romantic but I don’t want to choose some place that is described by so many as that. But within Indy Jared and I have walked the Canal on the 4th of July while watching fireworks, we have eaten dinner on a rotating roof, we flown (he’s a pilot) over the city during and just after sunset, and we’ve taken the time to explore museums, theaters, and so many more activities this city has to offer. What makes it romantic is because it’s only us and it’s where we call home.
16. If you could only listen to one CD for the rest of your life and it couldn’t be a mixed CD what would it be? I love John Mayer’s “Heavier Things” CD. I love so many of the songs! It’s such a relaxing and carefree sound. I love “Daughters,” “Come Back to Bed,” and “Clarity” to name a few.
17. If you could change one law, what would you change? One law that’s has changed for Indiana but I’d like to see changed on a national basis is allowing single parents to adopt. Although most of the laws inflicted are from the host country itself it still makes it possible for them to have a family as long as they can provide for the child
18. What are three tv shows you consistently watch? NCIS is a show I’ve watched since the second season. I am in love with all the characters, particularly Mark Harmon who plays Gibbs. I also watch So You Think You Can Dance. I missed Season 5 so I am enjoying keeping up every week this season since I don’t have to wait till July to watch it.
19. What are three beauty tips/secrets you have learned that you would give as advice? It’s always a smart move to think about taking care of your skin now so it looks best as you age. Always wash your face in the morning and before you go to bed. This will remove all dirt, oil, and make-up that has been on your face all day. It’s also good to wash your pillow cases every week. This will ensure when you sleep you aren’t putting more sweat, oil and other impurities that can cause breakouts. Lastly apply a moisturizer with antioxidants and sunscreen before leaving for the day or before putting on your make-up. This will protect your skin from harmful UV rays that can age and cause discoloration, but also quenches dry, thirsty skin. I use Jan Marini skin care that has the cleanser, acne solution and antioxidant moisturizer in the kit. It has been great for my skin.
20. If you could achieve one major goal before you die, it would be…? One major goal I set for myself has already accomplished of going to Miss USA and being in the top 51 of all the contestants that competed for their state titles. Another major goal is to influence and touch the hearts of at least one family to decide adoption is the way to make their family grow. If I can persuade them with my story, then I have reduced the number of orphans worldwide from 143 million to 142, 999. Baby steps to making the number a zero someday.

Thanks Courtni!!! Can’t wait to see you at Miss Indiana USA!

Don’t forget to vote for the next interview…all votes are anonymous…even to us!!!

Indy’s Very Own Sex Scandal…David Letterman???

dl
While perusing the news the last few days, we came across stories of Indianapolis native and Broad Ripple/Ball State alum David Letterman, engaged in a sex scandal. At first, we were extremely intrigued by the thought of a sexy, older man, especially one from our own town, engaged in affairs of the heart…or nether regions so to speak, but then we looked at each other and said, “David Letterman?” Who cares?

But apparently, a lot of people do. Since recently disclosing his secrets of affairs and the extortion/blackmail attempt made in relation to his affairs, Letterman’s ratings and numbers of viewers have shot through the roof; making the boys of raannt wonder…is this just another beauty queen staging a poor interview answer or fall on the runway? We hope not! Especially since we think it is so nice he is taking responsibility for his actions and apologizing to the women involved, including his newlywed Regina Lasko…after getting caught!!!

Anyway, in case you care, we’ve included a little video of ole’ Dave telling his story from his desk…We hope you enjoy it and don’t fall asleep!
[youtube=http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SriJ3WOZaXU]

Good luck Dave…we always thought you were hilarious; just don’t get caught getting undressed by the ladies again!

Alone In the Dark…

pa
The boys of raannt are both lovers of Halloween as well as the entire genre of horror films…and folks, it takes a lot to scare us!!!
In fact, since The Collector left the theaters, we’ve been waiting for a movie to make us jump in our seats and check closets before we go to bed.

And we think we may have just found that movie starting in Indianapolis this weekend. Paranormal Activity, a film which has been compared to The Blair Witch Project and slated to be even more terrifying, has been playing across the country but will open in more than 30 more markets this upcoming weekend. It is being called “the scariest movie of the decade”!

Although it doesn’t show much, we thought we’d give you a glimpse inside of the trailer to see just what this film is all about…

Don’t be caught alone in the dark…boo!

And The Winner Is…

The results from the reader’s poll are in…and we are extremely pleased to announce we had tons of reader’s votes! But there can only be one winner and this week’s “raannt plays 20 questions…behind the scenes” winner is...Courtni Hall, Miss Indiana USA 2009!!!

The questions have been sent and we’re getting together with Courtni soon, so stay tuned for the interview later this week..All in time for Miss Indiana USA in November!

And look for the new poll for next week’s interview!

Rewind…Fast Forward…Club Kids in Indy…Pause!

club_kids
The 90’s had club kids; Michael Alig(from our very own South Bend, now in prison)and Richie Rich of Heatherette fame, not to mention Amanda Lepore and the famed Limelight nightclub!
heatherette boysheatherette
Las Vegas has Pure and Rain…plus the new Peepshow with Holly Madison. Miami is lush, ocean chill with spots such as Shore Club and Nikki Beach. All of the clubgoers being tan, vibrant, young professionals, working hard and partying hard…
nikki_beach_miami1miami_hotel_001p
And what does Indy have??? Well, actually, Indy has a strong foundation for what could be an amazing social scene, complete with a certain midwest diversity of culture and style, but we haven’t quite grabbed it yet, have we? Constantly when we go out, we think to ourselves either…this has been so much fun we definitely have to write about this, or the alternative…whoa!!!! Wait a minute, I feel like we just visited the swap meet across from the race track! So maybe, we need to conceptualize and realize what we have that could be built upon…a kind of chic, horror movie, simple intellectualism of dance, music and collective style of vintage where east coast meets west coast. The middle of the road; above and beyond.
talbott street
Which is the main reason we endorse, yet challenge Talbott Street so much to be the best club possible…because we believe, they could quite possibly be the Limelight of Indy…especially after what we witnessed this weekend. DJ Deanne seemed to be back to her old ways; and the music was quite amazing! We’re not sure what has happened or changed, but her heart and soul seemed to be back into it again and that she had found whatever it was she had lost. The music was awesome and we had such a blast dancing again!!!(We had come out specifically to see Austria Andrews, because she told us she would be there but unfortunately she was missing…Hmmmm…We were disappointed not to see her, but Mokha Montrese dancing her ass off made up for it…completely!!! She was absolutely amazing, as were the rest of the girls! We’re wondering if Austria will still be making that move to Indy she talked about previously? If so, let’s hope those ducks are in a row first! Good luck to you lady!)
mm
And maybe the midwest’s version of club kids is drag queens, pageant queens and strippers…who knows…but we’re about to put pen to paper and define this town!!! There will be a test!!!

The Bitch Is Back!!!

aa1
Last night, having no events to attend and just wanting to hang out with our crew, Demi and Cole, we headed over to Greg’s for awhile. When low and behold, who did we run into but Miss Austria Andrews, from Nashville Tennessee, with Zori Zannell and Strawbella Be’Agoddess, both looking absolutely, ranntt worthy, stunningly fierce and raging! Austria is an old friend and it was great to see her again, along with her sexies. You can see her this weekend at Talbott Street. Word straight from her mouth is that she plans to call Indy her home again very soon…Hmmm…wonder where she’ll be “playing”! If you have never see Miss Austria perform before…go out and see her…She is absolutely amazing, the body beautiful!!! So excited to have her back in town! We’ve missed you!
bb
And down the street Greg’s will be hosting The Bitches With Balls Meet The Sluts With Nuts…”an annual employee turn-a-bout drag show, with the performers and employees donating ALL tips to the DEFA(Direct Emergency Financial Assistance) Fund via Indiana AIDS Walk 2009! Sounds like a rather awe-inspiring means to choke up some much needed cash! (Later in the week, we’re going to be doing a piece on “Change4Change”, to help raise funds for local Aids Service Organization, formed by local legend Vicci Laine.
v
We’ve been e-mailing Vicci back and forth for the last several days and are so excited to begin working with her. She truly seems like the goddess we have heard she was by so many people!!! (She has also included us on the judges panel for a pageant in December…can’t wait!!!)
If they gay scene is not exactly what you had in mind…we have a few suggestions tonight! First, since it’s such a drizzly, stay in bed all night kind of night, couple it up, head down to Blu, which has really turned things around to the positive in the last few months, and drink and dance all night!!! Of course, we would never want you to drink and drive, so don’t be cheap and take a cab over to The Conrad and do it up right! If Broad Ripple is more your speed, we DEFINITELY suggest you head over to Midtown or The Upper Room to start, and make your way down to the new and improved Landsharks.
aa4
But of course we think visiting Talbott to see Austria, as well as guests Ashley Kruiz and Mokha Montrese, with shows at 9:30, 11 and 1, is the most raannt worthy choice!

Smiley Drags Up Money For The Arts…

008
Tonight, Talbott Street hosted “Drag Race”, a competition of drag acts to raise money for Theatre on the Square. Not only did some local “ladies” perform, but Dave Smiley and his crew from The Smiley Morning Show were there, in mixed drag. This was our second time meeting up with Dave and once again, he was as genuine and hilarious as before, as were the rest of his gang! They all seemed to be having so much fun, even though they would be walking into work in only a few hours, with probably traces of foundation and eye shadow on their faces. We hope you guys had as much fun as everyone else did! Thanks for coming out and raising your skirts for money!
010
Yesterday, we had a chance to speak for a few minutes with our friend Vivian Farris, managing partner at Talbott Street, who was gracious enough to call us back on her birthday and fill us in on the purpose of the event and how Talbott Street strives, as a vibrant, social entity both in the gay and straight communities, to consistently support local charities and fundraisers, as was evidenced by tonight’s event as well as advertisements in Talbott for their raising money for AIDS awareness. We would especially like to thank Miss Vivian on filling us in and always being so wonderful! Happy Birthday Libra! Hope it was amazing!
vf
All in all the night was a great success! We were unable to stay for the entire event, but our friend, local DJ Jared Curry, texted us the totals for the evening; including $620 in tips and $1,800 from the door. Not too shabby!!! Thanks everyone involved for continuing to support the arts and we’ll continue to update and inform you of other upcoming charity fundraisers…and as always…

raannt plays 20 Questions…Behind the Scenes with Vicki St. James

vsj
Recently, after talking about all of the interesting people we have met in Indy who contribute to the fluid, social vibe that we encounter, we decided we would dedicate a weekly interview to “local celebs” who contribute to this vibe, and really try to understand the person behind the image. After this week, we will let our readers decide, based on a poll, the personality for the weekly profile. Voting will end on Tuesday of every week! This week, we decided to interview Vicki St. James, a local entertainer and female impersonator, who is a headlining performer at Talbott Street. Vicki has held the titles of Miss Gay Indiana 1995, Miss Bloomington, Miss Indiana Continental 1997 and 2003, Miss Terre Haute and Miss Iowa Continental 2007. She was given an Honorary Miss Gay IU and Emeritus MGIU. Besides performing, she also has a background as a veterinary assistant, optician and photographer. Family, including her mother and two adopted sons, are a vital part of her private life.

1. What is your name? Vicki St. James/Victoria Geiger
2. Favorite Place in Indy to eat? Shapiro’s
3. The SEXIEST place in the world? My imagination
4. Three television shows you watch consistently? I watch a lot of History Channel, National Geographic Channel and The Golden Girls.
5. What books, if any, are you currently reading? I am currently reading two books by the same author. “The Other Queen” and “The White Queen” by Phillipa Gregory.
6. What is the last book that you read? The last book I finished was about the Donner Party Pioneers. Ironically I found it between the children’s section and the cooking section at Half Price Books.
7. What was the last movie you saw? In a theater-Ice Age;The Meltdown…On DVD; The Tudors.
8. What was a movie that profoundly impacted your life? Pay it Forward.
9. The SEXIEST place in Indy? Well Talbott Street of course. I get to see all of the eye-candy and pyt’s!
10. If you could only listen to one CD for the rest of your life? A compilation with Patti Labelle, Shirley Bassey, Amy Winehouse. Phyllis Hyman would have to be foremost, I feel a great connection to her music, lyrics, voice and sadness.
11. Last song you listened to? Margaritaville
12. Most interesting local celebrity? Brenda Williams. I love her. She and I have worked together both on and off stage. I love the warmth that comes from her and she loves the gay community and supports it all while sharing her gifts with us.
13. If you received $1 Million, but had to spend it all on yourself in one week, how would you spend it? Just me? I would buy back my great-grandmother’s farm in Mulberry, Indiana and start a nursery. I would rebuild the house and make it big enough that my mother and a “few chosen family members” always had a place to live and be cared for.
14. What is a song you want played at your funeral? Now you’re making me cry. Helen Reddy’s “You and Me Against the World.” It is significant to me and I and reminds me of my childhood. Not standard issue funeral music.
15. Three things you don’t leave home without? My purse, my keys and my courage to face the world as a woman, knowing I was born a man.
16. Favorite drink? Good ole Pepsi Cola, although now I drink a lot of water.
17. Recurring dream? We lived in a house on Purdue Street in Lafayette. I was in kindergarten and everyday my mother walked me to school and we sang and she was young, happy and vibrant. I walked with my hands along some bushes. I still remember how those bushes felt on my hands.
18. Do you ever want to quit what you’re doing and do something else? At times, yes. Outside influences have taken some of the joy out of it for me at this point. However, I’m stubborn and refuse to give up easily. I think I would go back into the veterinary field, animals are a lot more caring than people and I think their bite hurts less.
19.What is your proudest moment? Right now! My mother has bone cancer and lives with me. It gives me great pleasure to be with her everyday and know she is safe and loved. We have always been close even if she didn’t always understand the transgendered thing. I am happy to have time to spend with her and am proud to have her as a mother. DON’T BE JEALOUS Y’ALL!
20. Long or short showers? LONG AND HOT BABY! The steamier the better!

Thanks Vicki, we appreciate you contributing to our great city, always being a 1st class citizen and being a strong and classy lady!

Vicki St. James can be seen Friday, Saturday and Sunday nights at Talbott Street. For more information, click here!
