One-on-One with Merritt Patterson From ‘The Royals’ on E!

Merritt Patterson as Ophelia on ‘The Royals’ Sundays at 10pm ET on E!

We’ve been counting down the days till the premier of ‘The Royals’ and it’s finally here… well tomorrow… but it’s finally here! During our wait, we stole Merritt Patterson from set to chat about the new E! scripted series. We wanted to talk the show, the scandals, the sex, and the cast! Not to mention the fact it’s premiering on Sunday March 15th after ‘Keeping Up With The Kardashians’ and a month ago it was picked up for a second season! OH MY, right?! As we dish with the incredibly beautiful Merritt Patterson, we learn about her, her likes, the excitement about ‘The Royals’ and most importantly, what we all should expect from the new series! So, buckle up and get ready for an unreal extravagant ride Sundays on E! (10-11 p.m. ET)!

Introduce yourself using 5 words or less.

Always Laughing. Passionate. Thoughtful. Determined.

How does it feel to be on a show that has been picked up for a second season before the 1st season premiers?

Being picked up before the 1st season premiere (March 15th at 10pm) is INCREDIBLE! It shows how confident E! and Lionsgate are in the show! Since day one everyone involved has been really invested and excited about the project. It’s unlike anything out there. Feels very special and I feel so fortunate to be a part of it!

Introduce us to Ophelia:

Ophelia is the American “commoner” among British royalty. Her father is the King’s head of security. They live in the working quarters of the palace. She catches the eye of the Prince and finds herself quickly involved, much to the dismay of the Queen. Not one to shy away from things, Ophelia, voices her opinions and pushes back, which often leads to uncomfortable situations… Confident, curious and out of her element basically sums her up!

Cast of 'The Royals'
Cast of ‘The Royals’

Describe your cast members/creator using one word:

Elizabeth Hurley – Fabulous

William Moseley – Passionate

Alexandra Park – Spirited

Mark Schwahn – Clever

Jake Maskall – Charming

Sophie Colquhoun – Effervescent

How do you define sexy? How would Ophelia define sexy?

To me sexy is being confident, kind and positive. Having a strong sense of self while being considerate to others and open-minded. I think Ophelia would agree. Although the Prince is struggling to know who he is and what he wants…

 What is the sexiest:

City- London!

Country- I’ve never been but the Maldives look incredibly sexy!

Royal scandal- Not very familiar with the real-life Royal family…

Celebrity- Brigitte Bardot circa 1960’s.

What should E! fans expect from the network’s first scripted series?

Lots of scandal, attitude and complications! The Royals is the perfect fit for E! What’s more enticing then watching royalty squander unlimited resources and abuse unlimited access?! The show also has a lot of heart. I think the audience will be thoroughly entertained and also be able to relate to the characters and situations.

Will there be an appearance from true British royalty?

Dame Joan Collins makes a grand entrance!

Though Kate Middleton, Duchess of Cambridge, isn’t American, are there any similarities between her and Ophelia?

Well I don’t know the Duchess of Cambridge personally but from my understanding she grew up in a regular family, experiencing normal everyday things like public school or grocery shopping. Ophelia comes from that world and see’s the Royals and their extravagance from an outsider’s perspective. I’m sure they could relate on some level.

What are your three simple luxuries?

Spending time with my family. Great coffee. Sunshine.

American Horror Story’s Kathy Bates Trolls For Korean Movies on Netflix! An Interview

kathy bates 1_raannt

Over the last few seasons of American Horror Story, we’ve had the pleasure to follow Kathy Bates from one controversial character study to the next. The power Kathy Bates has in bringing these characters to life is unreal; we believe them, hate them, love them and hate to love them all within one episode. The list of roles she has studied and performed throughout her career is a recipe for perfection as the probably the most notable female character actress of our time.  We stole her away from the American Horror Story – Freak Show set for a few minutes so that we could chat about this season, her acting process, surviving cancer and her relationship with Jessica Lange, Angela Basset and the AHS cast. Check out our interview with this iconic actress:

american horror story kathy bates_raannt
What is it that you most identify with in Ethel?

Her authenticity and her strength, her struggle and also since I’m a cancer survivor, although she certainly had the liver cancer. I really identified with that scene in the doctor’s office.

What’s it like working with Angela and Jessica for a second season, and especially because I believe Jessica said this would be her last season and that she’s retiring? Has that added something extra special to the season for you?

I won’t think about it. I don’t want to think about Jessica not being here next year. We’ve gotten to be such close friends now over the last couple of years, and I love her dearly. Working with her is a mystery I never want to solve. Angela, she rocks it. I just saw the trailer on BuzzFeed for Whitney. I’m getting chills now talking about it because I just watched it last night, twice; it looks amazing. I love working with her as an actress, she’s a powerhouse. I love the friendship that we had this year with “Ethel,” and “Desiree” had more to do together with those characters. I think that would’ve been a really interesting arc to explore.

How far in advance did you find out about Ethel’s death, and what was your reaction when you found out how she was going to go?

You know, I really can’t remember. Somebody asked me that the other day. They must have told me, and then I read it in the script. I thought, okay, there it is in black and white. I thought, well, it’s been a good run and we’ll see what happens next; you never know with American Horror Story. It’s weird to see yourself get killed on TV, but I was really happy with the scene between us. It was bittersweet.

What was it like shooting with Evan Peters & Michael Chiklis?

Well, I’ve shot a lot with Evan. I don’t know what it is, but I always forget my lines when I’m working with him. I don’t know if it’s because he’s so cute or when I just get lost in his eyes. When you look into his eyes, working with him, he’s just so real; it just knocks me for a loop. I know it sounds silly saying that. We had a funny scene—well, I can’t tell you about that. Anyway, Michael and I just have a solidity there that I’ve appreciated with him. He’s a sweetheart of a man, and just the opposite of what he looks like. I’ve enjoyed that. I felt like I’ve worked with him before somehow.

kathy bates 2_raannt

Throughout your career, and then especially with American Horror Story, you’ve played some very powerful roles and sometimes a little controversial. How do you pull that power when it comes to performing these characters, and how do you wind down after it?

Yes. When we’re working, unfortunately it takes me a couple hours to come down at the end of the day because we’re all jacked up. Sometimes it’s 12, 14 hours a day, and you have to just pace yourself. Then, afterwards, when you lose a character—sometimes when you’ve gotten really close with the character, like a friend, like you would in a way, and then you have to move on, you miss that character. I know Sarah Paulson has often mourned “Lana Winters,” not being able to play “Lana Winters” again because that was such a favorite role of hers. Yes, they stay with you; there are some roles for 25 years.

Was there a part of this season that freaked you out a little bit?

I thought what was shocking at the beginning of the first episode was when the freaks went and chopped the policeman up, and I thought, oh dear God, you’ve just shown these wonderful, quirky people and already fallen in love with them and then they go out and do this. “Twisty” was just unbearable, so I guess, in a way, it has been. Because it is set in the real world, I guess—my sister said this, she said, “I’m not scared of goblins and all that stuff.” She said, “But the real world is what scares me”.

What was it like to shoot your final scene with Jessica? Was there a lot of rehearsing? What was the reaction once you guys finally finished it?

Well, relief when we were done. Let me start back at the beginning. When we got the script, and we actually had a couple of meetings with the director on it to talk about the scene itself and how we were going to approach it because on the page it looks like Greek theater; it’s one monologue after another monologue after another monologue. With these kinds of arguments, in real life, it would be people would be talking over each other and all of that kind of stuff. It wasn’t constructed like that, so we couldn’t approach it from that direction.

We did a lot of talking about what was going on in the character’s minds and where they were coming from and would this be enough to—I know one concern from Jessica was, would this be enough for her to turn around and kill Ethel. Then, the shooting of it, oh my, Lord. For some reason it got scheduled on the last day of the week at 11:00 at night. She, especially, was just dragging because she had been working all day and all week.

Then, I had no idea she was going to knock the table over and do all of that. I thought the blocking was good, too. I thought Brad Buecker blocked it very interestingly because she’s got this huge tent; we were circling each other. That’s what we tried to accomplish was, to make those monologues really effective and real, even though they were written as these two titans, Greek gods fighting.

What happens on set after you film your final scene? Are there any goodbye traditions for you?

No, because you’re not sure if you’ve finished the scene. We left that night not knowing if we had to come back and do a couple of pieces or not. No, you don’t say goodbye, you move on.

Out of all the guest stars you worked with this season, who has been your favorite?

Well, I didn’t get to work with Matt Bomer, and I had seen him on Normal Heart and thought he was just wonderful. I’ve seen, of course, Wes. He reminded me that we had met at a party ten years ago. I said to him, “I really want to work with you.” He said, “Now, ten years later we’ve had the chance.” I just loved working with him with “Mordrake.” I was so excited. I thought he did a lovely job with that; trying to create a character who’s not really real or used to be alive, but has that aura of elegant. I just thought he did a wonderful job treading that line.

When you’re not working do you like to watch TV and, if so, what do you watch?

I binge. I just watched The Bletchley Circle. I troll Netflix for interesting movies. I really troll it for Korean, for Italian, French movies. I have to catch up on The Newsroom. A friend of mine, who was the show runner for Six Feet Under—he was not the show runner, he was one of our producers and he produced Newsroom, as well. When I get home I’m going to binge. I’m also a fan of Homeland. It’s not network TV, but it’s more HBO and movies on Netflix.

Angela Bassett Lets It All Hang Out on American Horror Story: An Interview

angela bassett three breasts american horror story_raannt

We’ve been huge fans of Angela Bassett for as long as we can remember.  We’ve followed her career through the Tina Years in What’s Love Got To Do With It into her other classic films including Malcolm X, Waiting to Exhale and How Stella Got Her Groove Back.  Now well into her 50’s, Angela still looks as good as she did over 20 years ago.  Last year she entered the highly talented cast of American Horror Story: Coven and this year she is back for her 2nd season on the show for American Horror Story: Freak Show as Desiree, the hermaphrodite with three breasts.  Check out what she had to say below about her cast, sex scenes with Evan Peters and the process of becoming Desiree!

angela bassett american horror story_raannt

Is your character based on any real person in real life?

Well, of that I’m not sure, but I know that there are instances of individuals who have this sort of characteristic. What they’re called is intersex, today. In 1950s, of course, the term was hermaphrodite, but today the terminology is considered passé, especially in that community.

What was the makeup process like for you?

Well, I went to an FX studio, FX office and about, let’s see; I think it was three women and three men that took to cast a mold of my chest area and then attempt to get the color right, you know, the color, the tone, that sort of thing. Of course, the tone is very difficult and it still takes about 30, 40 minutes to paint it once it’s applied.

What is it like working on the show and working with FX?

Oh, well, yes. Well, the work environment is really wonderful. I mean, it’s a hectic, fast paced sort of work environment, but the cast, the crew are tireless. They’re dedicated. They’re talented as heck. We put hours and hours in. There’s nothing but support from the network, which it’s evident from being picked up for another season, I believe I heard, after airing of the first show. That’s just indicative of the support that we experience.

american horror story cast_raannt

Could you talk a little bit about working with your ensemble cast?

That was one of the prevailing reasons for me joining the cast. I couldn’t believe I’d get an opportunity to work with Jessica Lange and Kathy Bates in a lifetime, especially at the same time. It’s wonderful. In some years, I mean, well, last year most of my scenes were with Kathy and Jessica. This year, mostly Chiklis and now Emma Roberts and the like. We’ll see. We’ll see. Everyone is just an ultimate professional. We have a good time. We have a good time with it. We all have an appreciation for this crazy world and the things that we’re asked to do. It stretches us and grows us. The fact that we get to come back year after year and they fashion some completely new insanity for us to play out is a plus. It’s thrilling.

Can you talk a little bit about what kind of interaction you’ve had with folks in New Orleans about being on this show and also last season? What kind of things do people say to you? Do they talk to you about Marie (Laveau) and now, also about the new character?

Oh, yes. Yes. I love New Orleans and I love New Orleans folk. I was really concerned portraying one of the historical figures of this city who’s so beloved and revered. I so wanted to get it as right as I could. I was really happy with the comments that folk would make that I was the best Marie or they really enjoyed my interpretation of Marie. They were pleased by and large. I didn’t run into anyone who was displeased, so that made me happy.

A lot of new eyes came to the series based on it being set here and based on those characters, Marie, Madame LaLaurie, and the like. This year, you do run into, well, someone just drove me to the airport and she said, “Oh, I can’t watch horror things.” You do from time to time run into folk who just think, they imagine just because of the title that it’s a really, really scary show. It can be initially, but there’s something about it that just grabs your imagination and then you can’t wait until the next week, and the next episode. Let’s see, what did they say? Sometimes I do get comments that it’s—what do they say? Demonic. I said, oh, no, no. Let’s not look at it that way. Let’s not look at it that way.

We saw the beginnings of a friendship develop between Desiree and Ethel this week on the episode, can you tease anything about the possible friendship or will they team up against Dell?

That’s the thing. We really don’t know what’s coming in the subsequent episodes and the subsequent scripts. That’s the aspect of this that makes it a little bit frustrating or difficult for us. I guess we don’t have input, but we might have influence. We’ve played it as good, good friends. It remains to be seen. Maybe they’ll see that in the writer’s room and it’ll take them down a different road then they had anticipated. That can, and does happen, and has happened in the past. We’ll see. I’d like to be friends with Ethel. We were such archenemies last year for all eternity as it turned out.

When you signed on for this year’s episode for Freak Show did you know what the part was? What was your reaction when you found out what the part was?

I didn’t have a clue whatsoever what the part might be, what it might encompass when I signed on. I just knew I had a great time the previous year, and if that was any indication, it was going to be a wild ride. I think it was about two weeks before I was scheduled to come down to start shooting that I got the, you know, the hot off the press script. I sat down to read it to see and I remember wondering, “Now, how am I going to know who I am?”

Then you read the stage direction, “African American woman in her 40s, hermaphrodite, three breasts, and a ding-a-ling.” You’re like, oh, my gosh. You immediately close the pages, and have to walk around, and process that for a minute. You’re thinking, “What does that mean?” Oh, my gosh. If they thought I was crazy demonic last year, what are they going to think this year?

Do you feel like the American Horror Story cast is sort of a family of performers as you go from season to season? Do you feel like more of a part of that now that this is your second time on the show?

Absolutely. I feel like it is a traveling troupe of performers. That’s true. This year I feel more a part of the family. You know, having been here before, having established those relationships, not the brand new girl. We’ve got some other new faces. I feel like I’ve been around the block at least one time with them. I feel more comfortable. I was excited. I’m still excited, but I feel more a part of the family this year, most definitely.

american horror story angela bassett 1_raannt

Today it seems like since we don’t have the actual freak shows, we have reality TV. I was just wondering for you, do you think there’s something kind of in our human nature where we want to see people that are kind of worse off than we are and we kind of revel in that? Do you think there’s some psychological basis for why people have wanted to see that, apparently, over a long period of time?

Our human nature? I think I would tend to agree. There might be a little of that, where there’s a little enjoyment in the misfortune of others. Not to their ultimate detriment, but a little bit of enjoyment for them doing worse off or getting into trouble; the whole thing about like, watching a car crash or something, when we slow down, and rubberneck, and look. I think it might be. There is, I think, one freak show out in LA, out in Santa Monica, Venice Beach, or something. I haven’t visited there, but I’ve seen some footage of that. I think they may even have a reality show themselves. It’s more like a tattoo thing and a sword swallowing thing.

We saw your character, actually from this season and last season, kind of get really intimate for the first time, and your scene with Evan Peters, which you both acted beautifully. Would you say that that was awkward at all on set? How was it shooting that?

Well, it’s not too awkward. He’s a cute a little boy, who’s engaged. No, it wasn’t too awkward. I mean, you’re playing characters. He’s quite a professional. I think the most awkward part of it was he was so emotional, and just tears, and things coming out of one’s nostrils. I think that was the most awkward part, but sexually, it wasn’t.

What’s the process that turned you into Desiree? How does she get that third breast? How long does it take to put on?

Well, I go in. I go into my regular makeup artist. She applies the appliance to me, so that it’s there basically. Then I go over to the special effects trailer where her husband makes sure the edges and everything sort of blend seamlessly. I guess I can say that. From there, he and the other special effects gentlemen will begin to apply the paint. They’ll start with brown. They spray it on. They’ll start with the brown. They’ll go to the red, and yellow, and green. It’s amazing these colors and undertones that they claim you possess. You’re like, oh, those are weird, weird colors. Then he’ll take a photograph of it to make sure that it appears as if it’s my own and based on that he’ll maybe go in, and do so more painting, and carry on.

What was your initial reaction when you first tried on the prosthetic?

Well, I was glad it wasn’t on my face. I’m claustrophobic. It’s amazing. You can just a little after about 14 hours of it being on. The initial appliance was extremely heavy. I think it was made of silicon. It started out fine, but after about hour number 12 and on it became hot and heavy. I believe it started sagging, which I’m like, what is the point of having three sagging breasts? No, this is not good. They reworked it and made it out of foam, which I was so, so pleased about because it’s the difference of night and day. Still after about 12 hours that internal heat, you begin to sweat. You begin to itch. You can’t really provide relief because you can’t get to yourself, you know?

Since you’re dealing with such dark material on set for 14 hours a day or so, are there any particular people behind the scenes that provide a little bit of levity to get you through those heavier scenes?

Let’s see, well, Sarah Paulson can make me laugh really easy, so can Gabby when she’s around. I haven’t gotten the opportunity to spend any time with her this year. But, Sarah is pretty funny to me. Michael is light-hearted. Emma is pretty crazy, especially last night, it was she and I till midnight outdoors in the cold. She’s pretty funny.

What should Witches of East End fans expect from the 2nd season?

Season 2 is filled with adventure and mystery! The portal to Asgard has opened and we are trying to figure out who or what came through. There will be unexpected romances, incredible twists and turns and a whole lot of magic.

What has changed for you personally since starting in Witches of East End?

I have so many new and extraordinary people in my life. From Melissa De La Cruz who wrote the novel, to our amazing show runners Maggie Friedman and Richard Hatem, the coven and our wonderful crew. I love this family. I also joined social media and it has been lovely to connect with people from all over the world. And we film in Vancouver so I live in Canada for part of the year. Lots of beautiful changes.

How will the new season be different from last?

We explore the dark side. My friend sent me a picture when she first saw the “Darkness is Rising” campaign and I thought it was really powerful. It said, “If you love the light, you will find your path. If you love the dark, you will navigate by the stars. If you learn to accept and love them both, you will find yourself.” That is part of the journey this season. We face the dark and discover more about who we are and what we are capable of along the way.

What’s your favorite part about playing Ingrid?

She has a huge heart. She loves her family and will fight for what is right. She is a woman of integrity and it’s inspiring to play someone who is so resilient. It’s also very fun to time travel. Playing a witch and living in a world where anything and everything is possible.

What should we expect from Ingrid this season?

Expect the unexpected for Ingrid this season. Ever since the portal opened she’s been sleepwalking and somehow ends up in the woods with a man/Mandragora from another world. He’s very powerful so that takes us on quite a journey. She also helps guide and teach some new warlocks as they explore their gifts. And love is in the air. It’s complicated but love is definitely on her mind.

Describe your cast-mates with just one word:

One word! Oh my!
Julia Ormond: powerful
Daniel DiTomasso: soulful
Jenna Dewan Tatum: magical
Madchen Amick: fearless
Eric Winter: delightful
Christian Cooke: hilarious

Re-define sexy? And would Ingrid define sexy?

A deep appreciation for life. A seeker, a dreamer, a person filled with hope and wonder, compassion and kindness. A beautiful, honest soul.

What’s the sexiest City? Hotel? Place to vacation? Co-star?

I moved to New York City when I was a teenager so NYC will always be sexy and magical to me. I also adore little bed and breakfasts. I stayed at a place called Los Poblanos when I was filming in New Mexico a few years ago and it was so romantic. Right on the Rio Grande. Connecting with nature inspires my heart and makes my soul feel alive. Hawaii is beyond sexy and beautiful and i really want to visit Switzerland.

Sexy co-stars? Hmmm. Where do I start? Christian, Daniel, and Eric are all very sexy. And the coven. We have a very sexy coven.

Any spoilers you can let us in?

Dash and Ingrid have the same brain chemistry so it will be very exciting to explore what that might mean. And we reconnect with people who knew our family before we left Asgard. It’s a very exciting and adventure filled season!

What are your three simple luxuries?

Reading at night by candlelight, a cozy bed with way too many pillows, and long walks or hikes on a beautiful day.

Make sure to catch Witches of East End on Lifetime every Sunday 9/8c!
