Monk Strap Shoes…Best Shoe for Fall 2012

The Monk Strap shoe has been in and out of style for a long while now, 15th century to be exact.  The Italians have had their fingers – in this case toes – in on the pulse of fashion since the beginning of time!  These shoes are said to originate from the friars (Roman Catholic high member of the church) in the Italian Alps, later brought to London where this unique shoe became a trend.

This fall season, fashion history cycles again to bring these shoes back in trend.  Here are a couple of ways you can wear them best:

  • Where them with a narrow pair of pants.  The current idea of these shoes is to show the decorative strap and buckle.
  • No socks are encouraged for both casual and formal.  The shoes are trendy enough that anything goes well with them.
  • If you want to wear socks, get creative with them – choose some that are appropriate for the weather and also have fun with patterns and colors.

Now that you know how to wear them, here are a couple of tips on how to take care of them:

  • Dust a little bit of body power, like Gold Bond, before you wear them sock-less and after. It keeps your feet cool during the hot days and smelling fresh after.
  • Polish your shoes! A true well-dressed gentleman will feel completely dressed once his shoes are polished.  Get the cream/wax at the shoe store or pay the $5 at the train station; add old school charm to something that is already classy.
  • Get yourself a pair of comfortable inserts.  If you take care of your shoes, they will take care of you.

And as always…

Sander van Doorn…THE Interview! Inside the Mind of an EDM Genius!

Sander van Doorn has been one of our top favorite DJ’s for quite some time, so it was no surprise to us when he was nominated for DJ Magazine’s Top 100 DJ’s of 2012. The man is an electronic phenomenon transcending dance music into a new era. Hailing from Holland, Sander has collaborated with some of the greatest names in the music industry and also has his own radio show called Identity.(All links can be found on his website at Sander van Doorn.com)Having played almost every major electronic dance music festival in the last few years, Sander van Doorn is at the top of his game.  We were lucky enough to grab him from his busy schedule and find out a little bit more about the man behind the genius!

1. Introduce us to Sander van Doorn in 6 words or less.

Music producer and DJ from Holland.

2. What are three things we wouldn’t know by looking at you?

That I am thinking about the studio or a new track idea.

3. How did you get into producing music? EDM music?

Same as most, I went out and experienced it as a clubber. It hooks you pretty quickly.

4. What’s your favorite thing about the current genre of music you’re producing?

I don’t really have a genre I wouldn’t say. I just write and what comes out is my own style. I love the high octane energy of some of the new tracks and songs I have coming out, pretty intense!

5. If you had to master another genre, which one would it be and why?

Maybe indie rock.  I play a mad flute. Hehe.

6. Many world known DJs use your tracks and production on their singles and remixes. How does it feel to be one of the best?

Great! Always feels nice to be appreciated for what you do in the world.

7. Who has been your favorite musical artist you’ve worked with?

Julian Jordan is a great new talent. 16 years old and full of ideas. That’s fun.

8. Talk to us about your single “Kangaroo”.  What inspired the lyrics and collaboration?

Lyrics? No lyrics in there just kind of a call to action. This is a collab with Julian Jordan, just happened by us talking and giving it a shot in the studio. Seems to have worked out!

9. You have a radio show called Identity, What inspired the show and what should we expect from it?

Just another way for me to connect with fans all over the world. I try to keep it very relevant for listeners and also update them on my whereabouts and any competitions or news.

10. Tell us about DJ Magazine’s Search for the Top 100 DJ’s. Are you in the running and who would you like the top 5 DJs to be?

It’s voted on by fans, so I guess it’s up to them if I’m in the running. I haven’t had the chance to be out much so I couldn’t rate a top 5. I really like Showtek’s energy and show and, I haven’t seen him live, but I really like the stuff from Zedd.

11. You’re all over the world this summer.  What is your favorite thing about touring?

Getting on stage is my favorite thing about being on tour. I rarely get to see the places I play, but when I can, this is a great aspect too.

12. How does the crowd differ from country to country?

Some are more reserved than others, so I always customize my sets as I watch how they react and interact with what I’m playing.

13. When traveling, what are five things you must always have with you?

iPhone, laptop, a credit card that hasn’t been fraud alerted by my bank, toothbrush, world-wide power adapter

14. How do you define sexy? What is the sexiest city? Sexiest hotel? Song to kiss to? Sexiest DJ?

Confidence is sexy. The rest is too subjective because it changes for me all the time.

15. What’s next for Sander van Doorn?

New track coming with Julian Jordan, working on new album material, touring

Thanks buddy!

WTF! Da Bop…Dance Your Ass Off! We Still Speak No Americano!

We just love turning this song on full blast and dancing all around our house.  Da Bop by WTF has spent 9 weeks on the European Dance Chart and is moving up week by week.  We love the old school sound similar to We Speak No Americano by the infamous Yolanda Be Cool Vrs DCup, which is one of all time favorites! Tie on your funky, colored wingtips or slip into your peek-a-boo pumps and dance your ass off! We’ve included both videos below to let you see the similarity, although both are original and masterful in their own right! We think Da Bop might be our absolutely new favorite…and possibly the best song to take us into Fall 2012!

How to Spice Up Your Suit

Most men, know how to put a suit together.  We get it tailored, match it with a great shirt, tie, belt, shoes…the works.  But do we know to add some spice to it to make our own creative style stand out from the rest? When does it become too much or not enough?  The idea of spicing your suit up is focused around what you wear it with, not necessary the suit itself.  Lately, there are a lot of bright colored suits or busy prints – completely missing the point of why you’re dressing up in the first place. You don’t’ want it to be about the suit, you want it to be about you in the suit.  These are some of the ways we would do it…but not all at once! Remember these are meant to be ways to quietly be noticed, loudly whispered about, and above all, subtly desired.

  1.  The magic of plaid is incredible and undeniable.  The understated, yet overly used, print is a great way to update your formal look.  It allows you to be playful, comfortable, and yet still appropriate for any formal occasion. Throw on a solid tie that matches the highlighted colors of the suit and you’re ready to go.
  2. Anyone that understands style knows that shoes are what bring the look together.  If you go all out on a suit, shirt, tie, please make sure you don’t forget the shoes! Don’t mess it up by wearing some funky old shoes that should have been thrown away years ago.  Grab a pair of studded Christian Louboutins and show everyone that not only you know how to kiss French, but you also dress French. If you don’t have the money for a pair of men’s Louboutins, at least spice it up with a pair of formal shoes that speaks of your individual style.
  3. A good, subtle way to have fun with a formal suit is picking a fun pair of socks.  Grab a pair of bright colored ones that match your shirt and tie.  This way, every time you sit down you tease your onlookers with a flash of color that showcases your fun personality.
  4. The whimsical touch of the classic bow tie has hit pop culture and modernized it to its fullest.  Today, all kinds of men wear them.  They come in pretty much every color and any print and fabric so how do you really make this bow tie your bow tie? This I leave to you. Have fun with it.  Shop around until you find a tie that speaks of you and your individual style.  Take the time to learn how to tie a bow tie. Instructional videos can be found on YouTube.  No matter how over played the bow tie seems at times, no one can deny an authentic, vintage hand tied, bow tie; especially in a tux!
  5. When all fails, grab a good designer belt.  The staple piece not only will bring attention to your high taste in fashion but also be a great conversation starter.  A strong Gucci or Louis Vuitton belt with a classic suit will not display garish style but will let onlookers know you care enough to notice the small details.

Remember that these 5 style tips aren’t really meant to be worn together, but separate to really highlight your sense of personal style.  The true art of a good suit is to make the man stand out from the rest without his masculinity being in question.   If you just can’t bring yourself to try something different, always remember this: tailor your suit.  It’s the best investment men can make when it comes to formal wear!

Ideal places to shop for these items: Nordstrom Rack, Nordstrom, Saks Fifth Avenue, Farfetch.com, Prada, and Macys.

And always remember…

Andrew Christian…The Saint of Sexy! The Interview

We have been such huge fans of Andrew Christian for so long that when we had the opportunity to interview him and find out what ticks behind the mind of the biggest name in men’s underwear, we jumped at the chance.  What we found was a well accomplished designer who, besides loving the male form, has paid his dues in the fashion industry and now stands alone as an iconic industry himself.  He’s also been featured on several reality shows including The Janice Dickinson Modeling Agency and Bravo’s The Fashion Show, making him one of the most talented and sexiest reality stars of all time.  If his underwear and this interview aren’t proof enough that Andrew Christian is the Saint of Sexy, go to his website and check out his incredibly hot videos as well as his inclusive line of men’s clothing.  Trust us, you won’t be disappointed!

1.  Define yourself using only 7 words.

Fashionable, shy, friendly, respectful, fun, inquisitive, mysterious.

2.  Although your clothing line has been around for more than 10 years, your men’s underwear and swimwear is what you are most known for creating.  What about your swimwear and underwear puts you above the rest?

Andrew Christian is all about fit! I spend countless hours with my team making sure the fit on my underwear is the best it can be. Underwear is the closest thing to your body so you want to make sure it fits correctly and feels amazing on.  The Almost Naked line is the most popular and I hear it all the time that they are the most comfortable underwear you can own. It’s also one of my personal favorites.

3.  You’ve become an icon in the gay community.  Who are your gay icons?

I am a big fan of John Waters.  I love his edginess and the fact that he  isn’t scared to take chances.

4. You recently did a video on Vimeo for gay pride.  What does gay pride mean to you?

I think it is important to love yourself and therefore since being gay is a part of who I am, then I am proud of it.

http://vimeo.com/43572881

5. What do you look for in a partner?

Honesty, a sense of humor and a nice ass.

6. Can you tell us about your body enhancing underwear and what inspired you to make them?

FlashLIFT is our latest innovation in Butt Lifting and Contouring Technology for those seeking the perfect bubble-butt. I noticed at the gym how hard people worked to try and get the perfect rear end. Doing endless lunges and squats and thought wouldn’t it be great if I could design a pair of underwear that did that automatically without all of the hard work.  After months of experimentation FlashLift was born. It’s you only better.  Show-It Support Technology consisting of a hidden “comfy cup”. This horseshoe shaped inner cup is lined by soft elastic that gently aids in the lifting and support. It doesn’t matter if your package is already ample, you can always be bigger, or just have the appearance of a bigger bulge.  Women have been wearing body enhancing under garments for years.  It just made sense that men should be able to do the same.

7.  What was the very first thing you ever designed?

My life, I believe your life is what you make of it and you can control what enters your life, positive or negative.

8. If you could only listen to 3 CD’s for the rest of your life and they couldn’t be mixed, what would they be?

Madonna “American Life” , Kylie Minoque “Greatest Hits” Nikki Minaj Pink Friday.

9. What is a book you would recommend to a stranger?

The Power, it’s kind of new world and Zen and all that, but it makes a lot of practical sense.

10.How did you get into the fashion industry?

I Started by designing clothes for myself and friends in high school. Eventually I got noticed and recognized enough that I started selling my designs in local boutiques. Actually that’s how I put myself through fashion school. It wasn’t always easy to make ends meet, but I can tell you I sure did have a lot of fun in those early days and wouldn’t trade it in for anything.

11. Who are your 3 favorite male designers?

Karl Lagerfeld b/c he’s so prolific, Alexander McQueen b/c he is revolutionary, and Versace back in the day when Naomi, Linda, and Christy were gracing his runways. It doesn’t get much better than that.

12. What do you think about gay celebrities who refuse to come out of the closet?

Coming out is a personal thing, but I feel as a celebrity they have an opportunity to set a good example for the gay youth population. It’s a shame that they or society in this day in age are still not able to deal with this issue.

13.  What do you think are the 2 biggest issues facing the gay community?

Equal rights will always be a huge issue for the gay community.  I would like to see gay marriage legalized nationally.  The other issue seems to be gay kids getting bullied.  It breaks my heart to hear about the suicides of these young kids.

14. What are your 3 simple luxuries?

1. Eating organically. I believe you get what you put into your body. I can totally feel the difference when I am eating healthy and clean. 2. Fragrance, it makes me feel just a little bit more dapper. It was Coco Chanel who said a woman without fragrance is vulgar. Well not to say a man without fragrance is vulgar, but I think there is something to be said about a well groomed man. 3. Time, it’s the only thing in this world you can’t buy any more of.

15. Tell us about your experience on The Fashion Show.

It was overall a decent experience.  The show was a lot more scripted than I would have expected it to be and of course I wish I would have stayed on longer. I’m just glad America could see what I could really do as a designer and especially designing women’s clothing. I even surprised myself about how well my designs came out. The best was when socialite Tinsley Mortimer said she loved my dress and would wear it out to a party.

16. What’s the secret to becoming an Andrew Christian model?

Workout and don’t eat haha! Seriously though, there has to be a lot said for personality. You can have the hottest guy in the world but if he is not personable, the general public will not identify with him.

17.  What would we have to do to have you make a special, custom designed boys of raannt, matching underwear for marriage equality in honor of our wedding last year?

You should have contacted me before the wedding.  Getting married in Andrew Christian underwear, now that would have been hot.

18.  Where do you find inspiration for your work?

Actually, the male body inspires me.  Therefore, the models are a source of inspiration.

19.  What would be the theme song to your life?

Inner City “Good Life” Such a great and classic uplifting song.

20. Boxers, briefs, jockstraps…or nothing at all?

Depends on my mood, but I have been into briefs lately.

Thanks buddy!

The Art of TIE

School is just a few weeks away – sick – so before you move into your dorm room, or fraternity house, or start buying your books for your senior year in high school or even a couple of suits for your fall internship; we want to give you some clues into The Art of TIE.  The concept is simple – ties are meant to be a focal point, an accessory, a way for you to show the world you have style – an opinion.  So when choosing these puppies keep in mind that this is to show case your personal style.  Play with color and textures.  Play with styles and width.  Most importantly, have fun and remember TO BE YOU.

Bow ties will show the world you have style, a playful one at best.  These classic ties have been around for ages and with their current twist they make for perfect accents in the dull corporate world of grey and black suits.  Bow ties also make for great party accessories.  They tell everyone you’re fun, playful, and not afraid to be yourself.  They are also the perfect form of masculine flirting.  Our own rule: make sure you know how to tie a bow tie! (No clip on bow ties please!)

The magic about the “regular” tie is that you can wear it with anything! Pair it with a polo and some chino shorts and you’ve got yourself a nice “off the boat” look which can be worn to class, a first date, a party or night out with friends.  The trick about these babies is the knot, of which their are two primary species; the Windsor Knot (the one that looks like an upside down pyramid), and the Four in Hand knot (the asymmetrical knot).  The Windsor Knot is perfect for all dress shirts, it’s more formal and you can wear it to work, an interview or your internship.  The Four in Hand knot is a bit more laid back, not as too formal and it works with any button down shirt.

Don’t know how to tie a tie? Check out our friends over at Tie-aTie.net! They have videos and directions on how to tie any tie! Or just YouTube how to do it and follow their steps – we trust them, so you should too!  Remember to have fun with your ties, they tell the world you have an opinion.

Poor Willie! Big Brother Rewind!

Didn’t Willie say something about not wanting everyone in the Big Brother house to know his brother was the hothead from Survivor because then they would assume he was aggressive just like his brother? No…we would never think that Willie.  Absolutely not! Oh poor poor Willie!  It’s not like he’s the worst person who ever stepped into the game of Big Brother.  That spot is held for Boogie and we all know it!

But Willie did get kicked off for being violent towards Joe.  Our question though…did anyone actually see Willie headbutt Joe? We rewound the footage several times and it actually doesn’t look like he did headbutt him.  Just saying, because in that case, maybe even the production team is trying to get Willie out before he gets more violent.  Come on folks…don’t you know why he’s so angry…it’s called latent homosexuality.

But our favorite scene from Sunday night was when Joe was trying to lock the HOH door before Willie walked in and he missed it by a mere second, the door flying open in his face.  Hi-larious!

We don’t really care…we liked Willie.  He got a bad rap and everyone put blame on him because, truth be told, then the focus is off of them.  We were shaking our heads when they were all commenting about how he “played the game too hard from the beginning”.  Yeah…wouldn’t want to actually play the game…

For the Shooting Victims of Aurora Colorado…Til Kingdom Come

Sundays in our home are movie nights, usually followed by True Blood.  All week long Alex has been excited to go see either The Amazing Spider-Man or Dark Knight Rises.  Today, while thumbing through our Twitter feed, we saw it quickly fill up with news of President Obama‘s visit to Aurora, Colorado to meet with the victims and the families of the shootings.  I told Alex we could go to see Dark Knight Rises any day, but today, we should go see something else, out of respect for the victims of the shootings.  He agreed.

Walking into the movie theater tonight was surreal.  Crowds of people lazily walked out after seeing Dark Knight Rises, as we walked in for the late show of Spider-Man.  Although it was just another Sunday night at the movies, it felt different.  As we ordered popcorn and soft drinks I noticed the prices of the concessions and how they had increased so much since the summers when I was in high school and went to the movies with my friends.  I missed those days of mindlessly walking into a movie, hoping to see other friends or a possible crush.

After sitting down in our seats, we both checked in on Facebook and I even wrote on our raannt Facebook fan page that we would be writing a review of the movie.  There will be no review.  Don’t get me wrong, the movie was fantastic; even better than I had imagined.  The absolute perfect summer movie.  During one of the greatest scenes in the movie, a Coldplay song, Til Kingdom Come, echoes in the background.  I tagged the song on Shazam and bought it on iTunes as soon as we left the theater.

Driving home, Alex pointed to a flag at half mast in honor of victims of the shootings in Aurora, Colorado.  “Did you know he was a Ph.D. student who had dropped out of school and was on unemployment?” I asked.

He was a terrorist.” Alex said bluntly.  “If he were from any other country, he would be labeled a terrorist.  He brought fear and terror into the hearts of people so to me, he will always be a terrorist.”

I nodded in agreement.

As we drove in silence, the Coldplay song strummed through the open windows while I remembered summers of my youth when blockbuster movies, stolen kisses and late night country drives singing our favorite songs seemed to keep us stuck in time.  The truth is,  I’ve never really internally grown up and those are still some of my favorite things today.

Late Thursday night, Alex’s brother, who just graduated from high school and is headed to college in the fall, began Tweeting about being at the midnight premiere of Dark Knight Rises.  “Regal is paaaaacked” he Tweeted, followed by “Who’s going to the midnight premier of The Dark Knight Rises?” and Tweets between he and a friend who were in the same theater.

When news of the shootings began to hit I was still up, reading on our front porch.  My initial thought was about the safety of Alex’s brother and his friends.  Although I knew they were in Indiana while the shootings occurred in Colorado, I was still worried this might be some mass terrorist attack.  I wondered what it might be like for all of the families of the people who were at the theater?  I couldn’t imagine.  I’m not sure any of us really could unless it happened to us.

I sat outside, listening to the crickets already playing their late summer tune.  I watched as a few people walked their dogs, completely oblivious to the terror on the other side of our country.  I wanted to call and make sure Alex’s brother was safe.  I wanted to tell the dog walkers what I had seen on the news.  I wanted to wake Alex from a deep sleep and tell him what had happened.  But what could we do about it?

The next day, news on the radio and television aired news of the story with reports from witnesses and family of the victims. The suspect, James Holmes’ was identified.  Even his parents issued a statement of regret for the victims, also stating that the police had the right person.  Having recently watched We Need to Talk About Kevin, I couldn’t imagine the devastation this would have on Holmes’ family as well.  Again, I wanted to stop people at the gas station and ask them what they thought.  I wanted to talk about it with my friends.  But what could we do about it?

Nothing.  And that is the sad end to this story.

We live in a world today of reaction and response.  An event occurs and we react.  We gather our notes, say the appropriate words and we respond.  And then the world slowly changes.  We’ve learned a lot since those Columbine and September 11th days.  We’ve learned how to appropriately respond to national terrorist attacks. But have we forgotten the price?

The price of popcorn and Junior Mints continue to rise and now we’re even afraid to go to the movie theater.  Our kids who are on dates or getting ready to leave their homes for college can’t even enjoy the innocent gifts of summer.  Maybe in a few years we won’t be allowed admission to the movies without walking through a metal detector and displaying identification.  Maybe in a few years we won’t even have movie theaters anymore.  Life constantly changes and we continue to react and respond.  Forgetting events, victims and the threat of terrorism again is part of our response.  It’s the American way.  “Oh, has it really been five years since the Aurora, Colorado shootings?”

But what can we do about it?  The world is a scary place today.  Maybe the best we can do is live our lives like innocent children swinging on the playground, higher and higher, enjoying every moment until it is our time to jump.

Having our flags at half mast is the least we can do.  We can start by remembering.

Just for today, let’s smile, remember all of the good times and honor those who’ve come before us…because, as my mother always said, we’re on borrowed time as it is.
