YouTube’s Cameron Elder of TheCamCamera is Extremely Flexible! An Interview

cameron elder 2_raannt

We first fell in love with Cameron Elder while watching his video “I Was Born a Woman”. After that, we watched all of his previous videos and became instant fans, following his channel TheCamCamera and keeping up with his weekly videos. Since that time, he’s done hilarious videos and collaborations with some of our favorite YouTubers, establishing a name for himself as a major leaguer. Of course, he’s super cute and funny, making it feel like you’re watching someone you wished was your best friend, so it’s not hard to become easily addicted to his videos. Even though we feel like we know a lot about him, we wanted to find out a little bit more about Cameron. Check out what he told us below!

cameron elder 8_raannt

What motivated you to begin making YouTube videos?

Well, I did make weird videos with my friends all the time. But if I’m to be completely honest, my true motivation was seeing others making videos, and then my inner bitchy-ness said that “I could do better than that.” Hahaha

What was the moment you knew you were starting to get a strong following on YouTube?

I think it first really hit me hard when I had multiple twitters tweet me, with my own face as their profile pictures. To this day, I still wonder what their faces actually look like or if they are my real life doppelganger. I guess I’ll never know…

What are five things we wouldn’t know by looking at you?

I. I am extremely flexible.
II. I once ate a worm for a video and it didn’t even go up on YouTube.
III. I was a competitive gymnast and cheerleader.
IV. I hate all vegetables except corn and peas.
V. I’m highly allergic to cats and rabbits.

cameron elder 7_raannt

Do you have a boyfriend and if not what are you looking for in a guy?

No I do not. But I am currently looking for one that can buy me a new phone and doesn’t mind paying for my car insurance on a monthly basis. If you know any…hook a brotha up!

What are your three favorite videos you’ve made?

This is a difficult one but I’m gonna have to say…
1. The Pain Challenge!!!- I did it with my good friend Nick Laws and I seriously had the best time hurting him. Great times.
2. How To Make Out!!!- I mean, i got to shove ice cream on my face while people stared at me. What more could I ask for?
3. California Hotties!!!- It was the first time meeting my ‘internet friends” in real life and it was honestly my first step into being more involved in the YouTube community. I still watch it on occasion just to reminisce.

Who are your five favorite YouTubers to watch?

Miranda Sings (MirandaSings08)-Because she is absolutely flawless and I quote her all the time!
Natalie Tran (CommunityChannel) -She is seriously one of the funniest and most witty individuals on YouTube and I completely fangirled when I got the opportunity to meet her this summer.
Lucas and Jenny- I just feel like we could be best friends! Like a threesome…of friends.
Tyler Oakley and Grace Helbig- I feel very honored to call these two my friends and they seriously inspire me so much!

cameron elder 5_raannt

What are three misconceptions of what life is like as a YouTuber?

I. That making YouTube videos is super easy. There is so much that goes into each and every video that it’s hard to keep up with and to be very straightforward, it can be super stressful.

II. All YouTubers have to have perfect skin and teeth. Umm…It’s called teeth whitening, good lighting, and concealer.

III. If you have thousands of subscribers on YouTube, you make a lot of money. Let’s just say, I probably put more money going into my YouTube channel, than I have coming out of it. hahaha

What advice would you give to someone wanting to get a strong following on YouTube?

First and foremost, make sure you’re passionate about it. Building up an audience takes time and a lot of effort, so if you’re not passionate about it, you’ll just end up wasting your time. Secondly, use your social platforms to encourage viewers. Find other content creators around the same subscriber counts as yourself, and cross promote each other via collaborations. And lastly, remember that even though the saying is, “don’t judge a book by its cover”, people do, and thumbnails and titles are everything.

Do you think there is sexism, homophobia or agism with people watching YouTube videos, meaning do you think gender, sexual orientation or age affects following?

Of course. As humans, we surround ourselves with things and people that we like. So YouTube is essentially a giant buffet for the world to decide what kind of food options they want. And I would say that a vast majority of people usually subscribe to the YouTubers that they would want to date. This obviously can be extremely beneficial or not so much, depending on where you fall with sexual orientation, age, and gender identity.

cameron elder 3_raannt

Is there money to be made as a YouTuber?

Of course there is money to be made. When you have the attention of thousands or even millions of people(depending on who you are) there are ways to turn a following into something monetary that doesn’t have to even go through YouTube itself. But I think people don’t realize how hard it is to get to that point.

What is one question you never ask a YouTuber?

“Will you follow me on Twitter/instagram?”

What is it like to have a large gay following?

Honestly I don’t see myself as a gay YouTuber, so I don’t talk about many LGBTQ topics. But I will say, that I do love when they can relate to my Zac Efron and Josh Hutcherson thirst.

What kind of camera and editing software do you use?

I have a Canon EOS Rebel T3i and I use Final Cut Express to edit.

cameron elder 6_raannt

What’s a topic too personal to discuss on YouTube? What embarrasses you to talk about?

Being that I live in the south, I used to find it extremely hard to talk about being gay. Over the years YouTube has really gotten me out of that shell but there is still times when it comes back. So with that said, I find it completely out of line for viewers to ask about the sexual orientation of my siblings. I know it’s just genuine curiosity from people, but that realization is very very hard to accept where I live, and I just hate that some viewers pressure them and the situation through comments and other social media platforms. If they wanted to let you know, they would. lol As far as embarrassing, I hate talking about sexual stuff. But for some reason, I will always find myself talking about something sexual with like Davey Wavey or Matthew Lush on someone’s camera.

Have you ever received any fan mail or hate mail which really changed your perspective on the impact you have through your videos?

I get a lot of Facebook messages and Tumblr messages telling me how I completely turned their whole day around all the time. But I’ve had probably around 3 or 4 viewers say that I’ve saved their life through my videos. Honestly i find it hard to believe that me doing silly videos every week could impact them so much, but they really open up about their experiences and Its incredibly rewarding to think that I can helped someone through such hard times. When it comes to hate mail, let me just say, people can get very creative with the word “faggot”…oh wait, no they can’t.

Murder, marry, fuck: Tyler Oakley, Joey Graceffa and Miranda Sings

Oh god! Of all people! hahaha I would Marry Tyler cause he would kill me if I didn’t. And I do love him as well. #CamLer I would fuck Miranda cause no one could say that they’ve done that with her, except her uncle. And kill Joey. Sorry Joey, you can punch me when you see me next. hahaha

cameron elder 4_raannt

Josh Hutcherson…Sexiest Man of the Day…And Possibly Gay?

josh hutcherson sexy 2_raannt

Well let’s be honest…he’s super cute.  Maybe sexy is strong word to use for Josh Hutcherson, especially since he’s supposed to be the cute one and Liam Hemsworth is supposed to be the sexy one, but after his interview and spread in OUT magazine, we’re starting to think that Josh is the sexy one! The interview is so juicy that Josh says he doesn’t rule out a gay relationship and thinks a threesome would make a perfect ending for The Hunger Games: Mockingjay. The fact that he is an advocate for gay rights is sexiest enough for us!  Read the interview and see what else he has to say!

Entranced by OWP(Objects With Purpose) Candles…Candle, Oil and Perfume All in One! Sexiest Item of the Day!

owp objects with purpose candles_raannt

A few weeks ago we ran across an article about a celebrity gifting suite for OWP: Objects With Purpose; The Wearable Candle!   We were so entranced by the creativity of these dual purpose candles that we reached out to creator Ianthe Mauro who sent us one immediately.  We were so excited when it came in the mail and even more excited to find the perfect occasion to use it.

The candle that we were sent was the Intimate Purpose candle, which also doubles as body butter and hot massage oil.  And…without giving you the intimate details, we’re here to tell you that it really does work; amazingly well!

The scent? Imagine laying on a beach all day in St. Barths, drinking drinks thick with freshly squeezed juice and swimming in the ocean, the sun and brightening your skin.  You go back up to your room late in the day for a nap before going out that night.  When you wake up, you realize you have slept into the early evening and the moon is high on the ocean and candles are lit around the room.  They smell like a mix of the tropics, sun, beach…and sexy.  This is what this candle smells like.  Island Sensuality…and we love it.

And let’s make one thing very, very clear; this candle smells expensive.  It comes in a small tin can that can travel anywhere and burns for several hours, only costing $10-$20 depending on the size.  We’re absolutely obsessed!

owp 1_raannt

Objects With Meaning also have several other candles including Dirt Rich, Fight or Flight and ‘Twas the Scent Before Christmas, which we’re exceptionally excited about.  In addition, they have roll on perfumes, room sprays and gift baskets.  We’re obsessed and want all of it!

Check out all of the amazing items at Objects With Meaning; The Wearable Candle!

YouTuber Neil McNeil Rarely Wears Pants When Shooting! An Interview

neil mcneil 5_raanntWe love Neil McNeil for so many reasons. Being that we started watching him at the beginning of his YouTube career, we feel like we’ve been there through it all; the hair color changes, the humorous videos and collabs and the daily Vlogs. And maybe without even realizing it, he’s grown up in the last year and a half, right in front of all of us. Maybe that’s what we love about him the most; the fact that even though he can be overtly sexual and flirtatious, even in a humorous way, there is a boyish charm and innocence, if not humility, in that smile; and we’re suckers for humility and charm. That being said, he doesn’t usually wear pants when he’s filming. Don’t believe us? Check out what he told us below!

neil mcneil 8_raannt

What motivated you to begin making YouTube videos?

I was actually working for a YouTube production company called Geek & Sundry at the beginning of 2013, even though I had never thought about starting my own channel before. While I was there, they were looking for a variety of new Vloggers to sign to their network, and when the head of the company, Felicia Day, asked me to find her a gay YouTuber who was also a geek, I thought about it and said “Well, what if I just started making videos?” A few days later I had my first YouTube video shot and edited using a friend’s equipment, and a week later they signed me to their network and wanted me to make more for them. From there I started my own channel, which kind of took on a life of it’s own over the past year and a half.

What was the moment you knew you were starting to get a strong following on YouTube?

I started uploading videos May of 2013, but I noticed my following start to pick up around September of that same year when I actually started hanging out with other YouTubers. I had met a few at VidCon that August and kept in touch with them, and I found out that a daily Vlogging couple (Will and RJ of Shep689) lived in my neighborhood, we quickly became friends and I started making more consistent content and collaborating with other Vloggers.

neil mcneil 2_raannt

What are five things we wouldn’t know by looking at you?

Oh I love this question! Let’s see if I can name off some things people don’t already know:
-When I was 16 I earned my black belt in Karate
-I was crowned Mr. Emerson College my senior year of school
-I’m the biggest Gilmore Girls fanatic
-I drink 3 to 5 cups of coffee a day on average
-My hair has been a mess of colors over the years, including blonde, blue, red, purple, and most recently, pink.

Do you receive hate mail or comments and how does it affect you?

When my audience first started picking up, I was also getting trolls on my videos. Nothing too bad, just the occasional derogatory slur about my sexuality or people poking fun at my nose. But the letters and the comments and the Tumblr messages I get from people telling me that they love watching my videos, and that somehow what I do on YouTube has a positive effect on their life makes all of the hate worthwhile.

What are your three favorite videos you’ve made?

My all-time favorite video I’ve ever done is my “Straight Guys React To Grindr” video because it was so different than my usual Vlogs, but it turned out hilarious. I also really love my tattoo video where I explain what each one means to me since people are always asking, and I did a really fun video with some of my other close YouTube gays where we all read passages from “50 Shades of Grey”. But I make it a point not to post videos I don’t absolutely love, so they’re all kind of my favorites.

neil mcneil 3_raannt

Who are your five favorite YouTubers to watch?

That’s like asking a child which type of puppy is their favorite. Let’s see if I can narrow it down to 5:
Tyler Oakley, of course. He’s the original YouTuber, and I don’t know a single Vlogger who doesn’t look up to him and the amazing work he’s accomplished over the years
Grace Helbig, because I would do anything to be that naturally funny and witty and charming and pretty. And yes, I definitely have the biggest lady-crush on her
Anna Akana, because you can tell she puts so much hard work and thought into each video. She’s never one to phone it in (and literally just post a Vlog she shot on her cell phone) and her content always looks amazing and feels so natural.
Miles Jai, because he has such a wide variety of videos but always manages to pull off whatever style he’s doing. Plus, he always looks flawless.
Okay I can’ pick a 5th, but I’m going to say literally every single one of my friends I’ve made through YouTube. We’re all such different people with completely different voices, but I love being inspired by my friends and watching them succeed in doing what they love. Go to my channel and click on ANY of the faces you see in my side bar, you won’t regret it.

What are three misconceptions of what life is like as a YouTuber?

I think the biggest one is that not all of us do this as a full time job. Most people look at YouTubers as people who only upload videos and spend all their time doing that, when really a lot of smaller YouTubers have day jobs and other side projects they’re consistently working on. We also don’t all know each other, YouTube’s a pretty big place and it’s impossible to meet every single person you technically “work” with. Also, most of the time we aren’t wearing pants in our videos if we’re just shooting from the waist up.

neil mcneil 1_raannt

What advice would you give to someone wanting to get a strong following on YouTube?

I get this a lot, and honestly if you want to have a strong following, don’t think of it that way. Go into YouTube wanting to talk to people and reach an audience you normally wouldn’t get to. Whether it’s 50 or 50,000 people watching your videos shouldn’t matter, what matters is what you can bring to the table and what you have to say. If it’s something you love and are passionate about, the followers will follow.

Do you think there is sexism, homophobia or ageism with people watching YouTube videos, meaning do you think gender, sexual orientation or age affects following?

I think it’s just a matter of people wanting to watch content that appeals to them and their interests. I wouldn’t be offended if somebody passes over my channel because I’m an LGBTQ vlogger, but I will call them out on their homophobia if they bring that to my page and leave nasty comments. Certain people look for certain content to watch, it’s just a matter of finding what your voice is and who you’re trying to reach.

Is there money to be made as a YouTuber?

People make money from YouTube views, sure, but a lot of the income comes from brand deals, sponsorship opportunities, and merchandise that come along as your audience grows. YouTubers can’t just rely on views alone to make money.

neil mcneil 6_raannt

What is one question you never ask a YouTuber?

Never ask how much they make per click, or per subscriber, or per ad. People get tired of that question very easily. And if you’re a fellow content creator, I’ve always found it offputting to ask to collab right after meeting somebody. Let that come naturally. I wouldn’t film a video I don’t feel comfortable doing, and if you’re a complete stranger who wants to shoot something with me, I’d want to feel comfortable around you first before diving into any on camera stuff. I’m terribly awkward when you first meet me, and so are most other YouTubers (probably).

What is it like to have a large gay following?

It’s great, and sometimes I forget that what I’m doing on YouTube is actually reaching such a wide audience. Whenever I get a new letter or comment or message saying that I helped somebody, it really puts it all into

neil mcneil 10_raannt

What kind of camera and editing software do you use?

For my sit down videos I use a Canon t4i with a 35mm lense and a softbox lighting kit I picked up from Amazon. As for editing, I’m old school and still using Final Cut 7. Not because I can’t afford to upgrade, just because I’ve been using it for 8 years now and know it like the back of my hand. Change is scary. Don’t make me download Final Cut X.

What’s a topic too personal to discuss on YouTube? What embarrasses you to talk about?

I rarely talk about my current dating life on YouTube, and I feel like a lot of Vloggers are in the same boat. We share so much of ourselves on the Internet that we like to keep the occasional bit of our personal lives to ourselves. I’ll also never bad mouth another YouTuber directly on camera, that’s just poor etiquette. As for embarrassing, I once covered my naked body in peanut butter and shot a rap music video about getting a blow job. My mother saw both of these videos. I’m bulletproof at this point.

neil mcneil 7_raannt

Have you ever received any fan mail or hate mail which really changedyour perspective on the impact you have through your videos?

Every single message I get from my viewers affects that way I make videos, as weird as that sounds. I’m always working to figure out what my viewers are interested in seeing and how I can give them more than that. I started making YouTube videos as a way to express myself, but I kept making them to reach people.

Murder, marry, fuck: Tyler Oakley, Joey Graceffa and Miranda Sings

Oh lord, I think I got asked this same one in a video I did with Matt Lush. Okay…. Marry Tyler because he’s the ultimate bae, Fuck Miranda because you know she’s a secret freak in bed, and kill Joey because his face is too perfect and no human should ever be allowed to look that flawless all the time.

What is the most profound YouTube video you’ve ever seen?

Anna Akana did a make-up tutorial that was actually one of the most beautiful messages about self- worth and confidence I have ever seen. It’s called “How to put on your face”. I watch it regularly to remind myself to be true to who I am.

neil mcneil 9_raannt

What are your current obsessions?

I obsess over TV shows and right now I can’t wait for Once Upon a Time and Agents of SHIELD to come back. I’m also a huge comic book nerd and have a massive collection. Recently I’ve been getting into snapbacks and bandanas too, because apparently I really want to look like a member of 5 Seconds of Summer with my neon pink hair.

Define Sexy. Who is the sexiest celebrity? Sexiest place to kiss?Sexiest city? Sexiest food? Sexiest song?

Sexy equals confidence in my mind, but I draw the line at cockiness. Sexiest celebrity? Probably Chris Pratt. Place to kiss? In the rain. Next to a waterfall. And there’s an explosion in the background. Food? Ummm ice cream. Song? Black Sheep by Metric from the Scott Pilgrim soundtrack. I’ll play that song when I get out of the shower and do a full dance routine to it. It’s really awkward.

What are your three simple luxuries?

Dunkin Donuts, my comic book collection, and Pumpkin Butter.

What Happened to Avicii?

avicii the days official_raannt

What happened to Avicii? Last year, we were super excited to see Avicii at Ultra…but he canceled due to health issues.  And then we were excited to see him headline at TomorrowWorld…but he canceled due to health problems.  We’re pretty concerned with Avicii.  We’re even more concerned about him with the release of his newest track The Days Ft Robbie Williams.  We’ve loved Avicii’s transition into other genres of music with his last few songs, but The Days, almost sounds like a One Direction cover.  Don’t get us wrong, we can get down with OD every once in a while and we love some pop music, but this seems out of the ordinary for Avicii.  The song isn’t bad…but it’s a pop song, and that’s strange to us.  Has Avicii sold out?  Maybe not.  Actually, we kind of like the song and it’ll grow on us…we just miss his stronger dance days.
